Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of the Antioxidation Mechanism of Loureirin C by Radical Scavenging for Treatment of Stroke

Ye-Shu Liu et al.

Summary: Recent pharmacological studies have shown that dragon's blood has an anti-cerebral ischemia effect. This paper reports the first experimental and theoretical studies on the antioxidation mechanism of a compound in dragon's blood called Loureirin C (LC). The results show that LC has a protective effect on cells by inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

DFT Study of the Direct Radical Scavenging Potency of Two Natural Catecholic Compounds

Ana Amic et al.

Summary: Theoretical examinations were conducted to determine the potency of H-atom donation from quercetin and rooperol to CH3OO· and HOO· through thermodynamics, kinetics, and tunnelling. In lipid media, the donation of H-atom from quercetin's catecholic OH groups via the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism is more significant. H-atom donation from the A-ring OH groups is favored in rooperol. Kinetic analysis with tunnelling provides a more reliable prediction of the H-atom donation potency, contradicting the misleading statements about the impact of C-H bond breaking. The 3-O-phenoxide anion of quercetin and the 4'-O-phenoxide anion of rooperol are preferred sites for inactivation via the single electron transfer (SET) mechanism in an aqueous environment at pH = 7.4.

Health benefits of polyphenols: A concise review

Ananya Rana et al.

Summary: Polyphenols produced by plants are highly essential functional foods in our diet. They have diverse chemical structures and play a vital role in protecting the organism and eliminating reactive oxygen species. Polyphenols can be found in tea, chocolate, fruits, and vegetables, and have the potential to positively influence human health by improving lipid profiles, blood pressure, and systemic inflammation. They may also interact with the gut microbiome, leading to therapeutic effects. Therefore, polyphenols are important for human health.
