Mental health effects prevalence in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review

Julia Meller Dias de Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the literature to determine the worldwide prevalence of mental health effects in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings showed that the proportion of children and adolescents experiencing mental health effects varied widely across different countries. However, there was a trend towards an increase in mental health issues. Therefore, policymakers, healthcare planners, youth mental health services, teachers, parents, and researchers need to be prepared to address the demand for mental health support.

Distinct effects of interleukin-6 and interferon-γ on differentiating human cortical neurons

Annie Kathuria et al.

Summary: Translational evidence suggests that cytokines involved in maternal immune activation can harm fetal brain and increase the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders. This study differentiated human pluripotent stem cells to cortical neurons and exposed them to interleukin-6 (IL-6) or interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). The findings show that IL-6 affects gene expression related to extracellular matrix, actin cytoskeleton, and TGF-beta signaling, while IFN-gamma affects genes related to antigen processing, major histocompatibility complex, and endoplasmic reticulum biology. Mitochondrial respiration and dendritic spine density were also influenced by these cytokines, but pre-treatment with folic acid mitigated their effects.

Incidence, prevalence, and global burden of autism spectrum disorder from 1990 to 2019 across 204 countries

Marco Solmi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the prevalence, incidence, and disability burden of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) worldwide using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study. The overall age-standardized estimates of ASD remained stable globally from 1990 to 2019, but the prevalence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) increased in high socio-demographic index (SDI) countries. In contrast, the age-standardized incidence decreased in some low SDI countries, indicating a need for improved awareness. The male/female ratio decreased over time, possibly due to increased attention to ASD in females.

Neuro-Inflammaging and Psychopathological Distress

Giuseppe Murdaca et al.

Summary: Inflammaging refers to a low degree of chronic and systemic tissue inflammation associated with aging, which is closely linked to pro-inflammatory mediators. Neuro-inflammaging occurs when inflammation and aging affect the brain. Inflammation plays a crucial role in the symptoms of psychopathological diseases by altering the metabolism of biogenic monoamines involved in their pathogenesis.

Neuroinflammation and depression: A review

Romain Troubat et al.

Summary: Neuroinflammation interacts with key neurobiological factors of depression, potentially presenting a crucial therapeutic target for future treatments. This interaction may impact serotonin levels, HPA axis regulation, and hippocampal neurogenesis, leading to the pathophysiological cascade of increased glutamate levels and altered neurotransmission. It can be triggered by chronic inflammatory conditions or primary brain neuroinflammation, highlighting the importance of addressing neuroinflammation in the treatment of major depressive disorder.

Maternal immune activation primes deficiencies in adult hippocampal neurogenesis

Amalie C. M. Couch et al.

Summary: Neurogenesis, the generation of new neurons, occurs throughout life in the mammalian hippocampus. Decreased adult hippocampal neurogenesis is a common feature of psychiatric disorders, potentially influenced by maternal immune activation. Evidence suggests that specific cytokines induced by MIA may disrupt neural progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation in the fetal brain, leading to potential vulnerabilities and susceptibility to psychopathology later in life. Further studies using animal models and patient-derived stem cells are needed to explore this hypothesis.

Maternal Immune Activation during Pregnancy Alters Postnatal Brain Growth and Cognitive Development in Nonhuman Primate Offspring

Roza M. Vlasova et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the neurodevelopment of male rhesus monkeys born to dams treated with maternal immune activation (MIA), finding subtle changes in cognitive development and deviations from species-typical brain growth trajectories in MIA-treated animals. Longitudinal MRI revealed significant gray matter volume reductions in the prefrontal and frontal cortices of MIA-treated offspring at 6 months, along with smaller frontal white matter volumes at later time points. These findings provide evidence of early postnatal changes in brain development in MIA-exposed nonhuman primates, establishing a relevant model system to explore the neurodevelopmental trajectory associated with prenatal immune challenge.

Critical Role of TLR4 on the Microglia Activation Induced by Maternal LPS Exposure Leading to ASD-Like Behavior of Offspring

Lu Xiao et al.

Summary: Maternal LPS exposure increases TNF alpha and IL-6 levels in both maternal serum and fetal brains of WT mice, resulting in reduced litter size and weight in offspring. Activation of the TLR4 signaling pathway following maternal LPS exposure induces abnormal microglia activation in WT offspring, leading to excessive synaptic pruning and decreased synaptic plasticity, which may contribute to the development of autism-like behavior in offspring.
