Attenuation of Skeletal Muscle Atrophy Induced by Dexamethasone in Rats by Teaghrelin Supplementation

Cian-Fen Jhuo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the therapeutic effects of Teaghrelin, a natural compound from oolong tea, on muscle atrophy caused by dexamethasone. The results showed that Teaghrelin can reduce the reduction in muscle mass and alleviate muscle protein degradation. In addition, Teaghrelin inhibited the signaling pathway for protein degradation by activating Akt phosphorylation. Rating: 9/10

Genome editing of a rice CDP-DAG synthase confers multipathogen resistance

Gan Sha et al.

Summary: The discovery and application of genome editing has provided efficient tools for precise engineering of crop genomes, leading to a new era in plant breeding. In this study, researchers demonstrated the power of genome editing in engineering broad-spectrum disease resistance in rice. They identified a gene named RBL1, which, when mutated, resulted in broad-spectrum disease resistance but also caused a significant decrease in yield.

Extraction, phytochemical characterization and anti-cancer mechanism of Haritaki churna: An ayurvedic formulation

Md Rafi Uz Zama Khan et al.

Summary: Haritaki churna (HC), a single herb ayurvedic formulation, has anti-cancer activity against different types of cancer cells. The aqueous extract of Haritaki churna (HCAE) reduces the cellular viability of colorectal cancer cells without affecting primary human cells. Through chromatography and spectroscopic techniques, 13 compounds were identified in HCAE, with ellagic acid playing a significant role in its anti-cancer effect. Ellagic acid from HCAE halts cancer cell cycle at the DNA synthesis S-phase, induces apoptosis, and activates the mitochondrial pathway of cell death.

Identification of Withania somnifera-Silybum marianum-Trigonella foenum-graecum Formulation as a Nutritional Supplement to Contrast Muscle Atrophy and Sarcopenia

Laura Salvadori et al.

Summary: The study identified the WST (Withania somnifera, Silybum marianum, Trigonella foenum-graecum) formulation as effective in protecting C2C12 myotubes against MyHC-II degradation, by stimulating protein synthesis and myoblast differentiation. WST has the potential to sustain nutrition in atrophic myotubes and rescue size and functionality in both young and sarcopenic myotubes.
