Mitochondrial Dynamics in the Metabolic Memory of Diabetic Retinopathy

Ghulam Mohammad et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a significant role in the development and metabolic memory of diabetic retinopathy. The activation of dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) and mitochondrial fragmentation increase in high glucose conditions, leading to mitochondrial damage. Supplementation of normal glucose levels with a Drp1 inhibitor can attenuate mitochondrial damage.

Hepatocyte Mitochondrial Dynamics and Bioenergetics in Obesity-Related Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Aigli-Ioanna Legaki et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial dysfunction is believed to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of various disorders, including neurodegeneration, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic dysregulation associated with obesity. This review focuses on the significance of mitochondrial adaptations, particularly in hepatocytes, in obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Accumulating evidence suggests that dysregulated mitochondrial morphology and bioenergetics are involved in the development and progression of NAFLD.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Plays Central Role in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Raghu Ramanathan et al.

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global pandemic strongly associated with metabolic syndromes. Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is suggested as a more appropriate term to describe the disease, emphasizing the role of metabolic dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a significant role in NAFLD development and targeting mitochondria shows promise for drug development.

Redox Active α-Lipoic Acid Differentially Improves Mitochondrial Dysfunction in a Cellular Model of Alzheimer and Its Control Cells

Fabian Dieter et al.

Summary: Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) has strong antioxidant properties and can significantly improve mitochondrial dysfunction in a cellular model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). ALA increases the activity of respiratory chain complexes, enhances mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and ATP levels, leading to improved mitochondrial function.

Increased glycolysis is an early consequence of palmitate lipotoxicity mediated by redox signaling

Pamela A. Kakimoto et al.

Summary: Exposure to toxic levels of fatty acids leads to cell damage and death, contributing to the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome. Lipotoxicity induces changes in mitochondrial morphology and increases glycolytic flux in cells, while oxidative phosphorylation remains unchanged.
