Photothermal effects of gold nanorods in aqueous solution and gel media: Influence of particle size and excitation wavelength

Zendesha S. S. Mbalaha et al.

Summary: The heat generation of large and small gold nanorods with different aspect ratios under resonant and off-resonant excitation in aqueous solution and gel-like media is investigated. It is found that the temperature rise of small gold nanorods is higher than that of large gold nanorods in both resonant and off-resonant excitation, and the photothermal effect in gel is also better for small gold nanorods.

Magneto-mechanical destruction of cancer-associated fibroblasts using ultra-small iron oxide nanoparticles and low frequency rotating magnetic fields

Sara Lopez et al.

Summary: By mechanically activating ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with a rotating low-amplitude low-frequency magnetic field, cell death induction in pancreatic cancer-associated fibroblasts was maximized to 34%. The force generated by the nanoparticles inside lysosomes was calculated to be approximately 3 pN, leading to lysosome membrane permeabilization and cell death through a lysosomal pathway dependent on cathepsin-B activity.

Cellular Uptake of Gold Nanorods in Breast Cancer Cell Lines

Bryan E. White et al.

Summary: This study investigates the uptake mechanism and localization of gold nanorods in SKBR-3 and MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines. The results demonstrate differences and similarities in the interaction between nanorods and cells of the two cell lines. The cellular uptake of gold nanorods in SKBR-3 and MCF-7 was accurately quantified using ICP-MS, and the intracellular nanoparticle localization was qualitatively tracked using transmission electron microscopy.

Combined Photodynamic and Photothermal Therapy and Immunotherapy for Cancer Treatment: A Review

Cunqing Kong et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the importance and development of photoactivation therapy based on photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) in tumor treatment. Photosensitizers and photothermal conversion agents play a key role in the phototherapy process. The advancement of nanotechnology has promoted the application of phototherapy in tumor treatment. PDT can increase the sensitivity of tumor cells to PTT, while PTT can enhance the therapeutic effect of PDT.

In vivo Realization of Dual Photodynamic and Photothermal Therapy for Melanoma by Mitochondria Targeting Dinuclear Ruthenium Complexes under Civil Infrared Low-power Laser

Meng-Fan Wang et al.

Summary: A series of dinuclear Ru-II complexes with extremely high TPA cross sections have been designed. Among them, the amphiphilic complex Ru3 becomes the ideal drug candidate with balanced performance in singlet oxygen generation and photothermal conversion. Ru3 targets mitochondria without penetrating the nucleus, significantly increasing its photodynamic therapy activity and reducing its cytotoxicity. It successfully suppresses melanoma tumor growth in vitro and in vivo with combined photodynamic and photothermal therapy, showing potential as a new generation of low-power IR-driven dual PDT/PTT drugs.

Summary: Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a new tumor treatment strategy with the advantages of accuracy, ease of administration, high efficiency, and low side effects. This paper reviews the important role of photothermal transduction agents (PTAs) in PTT and discusses methods to improve photothermal conversion efficiency. The structure and characteristics of various PTAs are compared and analyzed, and the applications of photothermal synergistic therapies, including PTT combined with immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and photodynamic therapy, are reviewed.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

O. Casanova-Carvajal et al.

Summary: This article explores the role of silica microparticles in combination with conventional nanoparticles to reduce the high concentrations of particles and intense laser beams in optical hyperthermia, aiming to improve the overall biocompatibility of the procedure. Experimental results confirm the hypothesis, indicating potential improvement in cell survival efficiency with reduced concentrations of conventional nanoparticles. Further studies are needed to explore the application of this technique in 3D tissue structures for potentially higher optical density and improved outcomes.
