CPEB1-dependent disruption of the mRNA translation program in oocytes during maternal aging

Nozomi Takahashi et al.

Summary: In the absence of transcription, gene expression required for oocyte maturation is regulated by translation of preexisting mRNAs. A defective program of mRNA translation in oocyte is associated with maternal aging, leading to a decline in oocyte quality during aging. Dysfunction in the oocyte translation program is characterized by disrupted ribosome loading, altered translation of 3'-UTR-reporters, altered poly(A) length of mRNAs, decreased levels of Cpeb1 mRNA translation and protein, and de-repression of Ccnb1 translation in old oocytes.

Septin 9 controls CCNB1 stabilization via APC/CCDC20 during meiotic metaphase I/anaphase I transition in mouse oocytes

Li Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the critical role of Septin 9 in mouse oocyte meiotic cell cycle progression. Septin 9 regulates the kinetochore-microtubule connection and SAC protein localization on kinetochores, affecting the MI-AI transition as well as APC/C-CDC20 activity and CCNB1 degradation.

Cyclin B3 implements timely vertebrate oocyte arrest for fertilization

Nora Bouftas et al.

Summary: To ensure successful reproduction, vertebrate oocytes must pause the cell cycle until sperm entry. This study reveals that cyclin B3 plays a crucial role in keeping Emi2 levels low during the first meiotic division. These findings provide insights into the evolutionarily conserved mechanisms that control oocyte arrest, which is essential for embryo viability.
