Staphylococcus aureus host interactions and adaptation

Benjamin P. Howden et al.

Summary: Invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections are common and often result in high mortality due to drug resistance. This review examines recent advances in understanding the interactions between S. aureus and its host, including immune responses, metabolism, and genomic plasticity. The authors also discuss the challenges in vaccine development and the role of other bacteria in shaping S. aureus colonization.

Isolation and Characterization of Poeciguamerin, a Peptide with Dual Analgesic and Anti-Thrombotic Activity from the Poecilobdella manillensis Leech

Chaoming Wang et al.

Summary: We isolated and identified a serine protease inhibitor (poeciguamerin) from the salivary secretions of Poecilobdella manillensis, which exhibited elastase inhibition and analgesic properties. Additionally, poeciguamerin showed anticoagulant activity in a mouse model of carotid artery thrombosis induced by FeCl3. This study highlights the potential of poeciguamerin as a promising elastase inhibitor with potent analgesic and antithrombotic activity.

Hirudomacin: a Protein with Dual Effects of Direct Bacterial Inhibition and Regulation of Innate Immunity

Yu Du et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that Hmc directly inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in the intestines of infected nematodes and can prolong the lifespan of infected nematodes. Hmc treatment also increases the expression of antimicrobial effectors and key genes in the immune response pathway. These findings suggest that Hmc has both direct bacteriostatic and immunomodulatory effects, making it a potential antibacterial agent and immune modulator.

Role of LL-37 in thrombotic complications in patients with COVID-19

Zilei Duan et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the levels of antimicrobial peptide LL-37 are elevated during SARS-CoV-2 infection. LL-37 is associated with hypercoagulation and thrombosis formation in COVID-19 patients. Injection of cathelicidin peptides promotes thrombosis, while deletion of cathelicidin inhibits thrombosis.

Human antimicrobial peptide LL-37 contributes to Alzheimer's disease progression

Xue Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 promotes the membrane translocation and integration of CLIC1, leading to microglial hyperactivation and neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease. The findings suggest that LL-37 may act as an endogenous agonist of CLIC1, driving the progression of AD.

Make it double: identification and characterization of a Tandem-Hirudin from the Asian medicinal leech Hirudinaria manillensis

Phil Lukas et al.

Summary: A novel salivary gland factor, Tandem-Hirudin (TH), was identified and characterized in the Asian medicinal leech, Hirudinaria manillensis. TH has a different structure from known hirudins, with two globular domains arranged in tandem and lacking an elongated C-terminal tail. It was found that TH may not have thrombin inhibitory potency.

Suhair Abdeen et al.

Summary: The study found elevated plasma levels of alpha-defensins in COVID-19 patients, which correlated with disease progression, mortality or resolution, as well as plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and D-dimers. This indicates a link between inflammation and the risk of thromboembolism.
