In-situ remediation of phosphogypsum in a cement-free pathway: Utilization of ground granulated blast furnace slag and NaOH pretreatment

Qiusong Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of NaOH pretreatment and ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) additives was used to solidify phosphogypsum (PG) for cemented paste backfill (CPB) with a lower carbon footprint. The NaOH pretreatment effectively removed approximately 95% of F within the PG, resulting in more hydration products and effective F and P retention candidates. The addition of GGBFS promoted the generation of additional cement hydrates. The macro mechanical performance analysis showed that the mixtures of pretreated-PG-GGBFS exhibited excellent mechanical performance. Elemental mapping and toxicity characteristic leaching procedures demonstrated competitive F and P immobilization ability compared to typical OPC binder and individual GGBFS addition. This study opens up new perspectives for synergistic recycling of PG and GGBFS in a profitable and low carbon footprint way.

Microscale mechanism of tailing thickening in metal mines

Huazhe Jiao et al.

Summary: Water-locking flocs formed by ultrafine tailings particles adversely affect the thickening process during paste preparation. Previous studies have disregarded the relationship between the mesostructure and seepage characteristics of tail mortar during deep dehydration stage. In this study, a shearing seepage test was conducted on unclassified tailing-sedimentation bed using copper tailings, and the morphology and distribution of micropores were analyzed through X-ray computed tomography. The results highlight significant changes in porosity and seepage characteristics after shearing, with the formation of dominant water-seepage flow channels through the connection of isolated pores.

Experimental study on erosion-corrosion behavior of liquid-solid swirling flow in pipeline

Hao Zhou et al.

Summary: A multifactorial experimental research on erosion-corrosion behavior of liquid-solid swirling flow in pipeline was conducted, revealing the significant effects of velocity, sand size, and sand concentration on the erosion-corrosion rate. Under the swirling flow condition, cutting and corrosion pits were found to be the primary forms of surface damage. The net effect of swirling flow on erosion-corrosion varied with sand size. Analysis of the corrosion product showed the presence of Fe2O3 and CaCO3 under both swirling and non-swirling flow conditions. Compared to non-swirling flow, the oxygen content on the electrode surface increased by 42.42% and 35.06% under swirling flow condition.

Summary: This research proposes a new atherosclerosis detection method based on molecular communication, that is, to evaluate the arterial stenosis degree by modeling and using statistical data of NPs emission and reception in blood vessels. This method can not only use a simple method to detect the early stage of the disease but also directly use data to quantify the pathological process of each stage, which is straightforward to assist doctors and may reduce the labor cost of traditional detection.

Numerical simulation of erosion and fatigue failure the coal gangue paste filling caused to pumping pipes

Boqiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical behavior of high-viscosity coal gangue paste using computational fluid dynamics and discrete element coupling method. The interaction forces among particles and the effect of collisions were analyzed through the bidirectional coupling of particles and fluid. The simulation results revealed severe erosion of the flow field in the pipe, leading to a significant reduction in the life of the components, which were consistent with the field test results.

Rheological behavior of paste in metal mines

Aixiang Wu et al.

Summary: Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is an effective approach for tailings management and underground goaf treatment. Paste rheology, which studies the flow and deformation behaviors of paste during the CPB process, plays a crucial role in solving engineering problems. However, due to the complexity of paste rheology, further research is needed to establish a comprehensive theoretical system.

Summary: This study investigated the carbon-uptake characteristics and mechanical property of CPB in underground mined-out stopes. The results showed that the carbonation rate increased significantly with carbonation curing, and each ton of CPB could absorb about 78.4 kg CO2. CC affected the strength development and improved the pore structure of CPB.

CFD-DEM analysis of hydraulic conveying bends: Interaction between pipe orientation and flow regime

Mengmeng Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical study of hydraulic bends in a conveying pipeline system, focusing on the interaction between pipe orientation and flow regime. The results show significant differences in pressure drop and erosion rate for different pipe orientations and conveying speeds. Among the three simulated pipe orientations, the inclined bend performs the best under various flow regimes, with minimal impact from pressure drop, pressure fluctuation, and erosion rate.

An energy-efficient pathway to turbulent drag reduction

Ivan Marusic et al.

Summary: Skin-friction drag can be decreased by oscillatory motion in the surface at high Reynolds numbers, with two distinct pathways for drag reduction identified: one involving frequencies comparable to small-scale eddies and the other involving frequencies comparable to large-scale eddies. The second pathway offers more efficient drag reduction at higher Reynolds numbers, presenting new opportunities for reducing fuel consumption and increasing power generation.

Early turbulence and pulsatile flows enhance diodicity of Tesla's macrofluidic valve

Quynh M. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Microfluidics has revolutionized the manipulation of small volumes of fluids, while the study also explores the complexities of inertial flow physics in macrofluidics. Experimental results demonstrate that diodicity turns on abruptly at low Reynolds numbers, boosting performance for pulsatile flows and suggesting applications in fluidic mixing and pumping. Additionally, the device proposed by Tesla can operate as a diode for alternating flow at high frequencies, enabled by a transition to turbulent-like flow at low Reynolds numbers.
