Temporal convolutional networks for data-driven thermal modeling of directed energy deposition

V. Perumal et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing (AM) involves complex multiscale and multiphysics processes. Deep learning-based approaches, specifically temporal convolutional networks (TCNs), have been proposed as a solution to the challenges faced by physics-based modeling methods in predicting thermal histories in AM. This study presents the use of TCNs for fast inferencing in directed energy deposition (DED) processes, achieving comparable accuracy to other deep learning methods with significantly reduced compute and training times.

Heat Source Modeling and Residual Stress Analysis for Metal Directed Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing

Abhilash Kiran et al.

Summary: The development of simplified tools for additive manufacturing research is encouraged by advancements in the field. This study evaluated a simplified heat source model called concentrated heat source for directed energy deposition. The model was compared to the widely accepted Goldak heat source model and showed good agreement in terms of melt pool shape and temperature contour. Additionally, the concentrated heat source model reported faster computational time and was validated for thermo-mechanical simulation of 3D solid structures.

An enhanced finite element modelling based on self-regulation effect in directed energy deposition of Ti-6Al-4V

Bo Yao et al.

Summary: In laser blown powder directed energy deposition (DED), the self-regulation effect (SRE) is a unique phenomenon that compensates for the sloping deposition surface induced by process fluctuations or part warpage. Previous numerical studies on DED have overlooked the variable layer thickness and the credibility of simulations. In this study, an improved modeling process considering SRE is proposed, and experimental measurements are used to quantify the relationship between layer thickness and powder standoff distance (PSD) and inter-layer temperature (ILT). Two thermo-mechanical finite element (FE) models are established to examine the proposed modeling strategy, and the results demonstrate that the model with SRE significantly improves the mechanical and geometric predictions of DED parts.
