Soft robotic surface enhances the grasping adaptability and reliability of pneumatic grippers

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: Soft grippers have gained increasing attention in the field of robotics due to their excellent compliance and ease of fabrication. Inspired by the Venus flytrap, this study proposes a soft gripper consisting of two soft robotic surfaces (SRSs), capable of both enveloping and pinching grasp modes. An analytical model of the SRS is developed to guide the gripper design, and experimental results validate the model's accuracy. The grasping performance of the soft gripper is investigated, demonstrating its adaptability and reliability.

Modeling and analysis of soft robotic surfaces actuated by pneumatic network bending actuators

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: Soft robots are a nascent field aiming for safe human interaction and adaptability to unstructured environments. This paper introduces a new type of two-dimensional soft robot, called soft robotic surface (SRS), which is actuated by pneumatic network bending actuators. An analytical model of the SRS was constructed and capable of accurately predicting its deformation. By controlling the applied pressure, the deformation shape of the SRS can be reconfigured. The analytical model provides a solution for programming the surface morphing of soft robot surfaces.

Static Modeling of the Fiber-Reinforced Soft Pneumatic Actuators Including Inner Compression: Bending in Free Space, Block Force, and Deflection upon Block Force

Yi Sun et al.

Summary: FR-SPAs are widely used in soft robotics due to their structural strength, motion range, and force output. However, little attention has been given to the compression effect on the inner wall by the compressed air, and there is no unified modeling principle for bending, force output, and deflection. This study proposes a static modeling approach based on moment equilibrium for free bending, block force, and deflection cases of FR-SPAs, considering the compression effect on the inner wall for more accurate predictions of bending angles, block forces, and deflections.

A New Type of Soft Pneumatic Torsional Actuator With Helical Chambers for Flexible Machines

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: A new type of torsional soft pneumatic actuator is designed based on reversible, cooperative buckling of elastomer, which can achieve a torsion angle of 1.94 deg/mm and an output torque of 26 N.mm. Experimental results show that the height of the actuator can increase the torsion angle and output torque, while the pitch can decrease them. By changing the materials used, the output torque can be improved. This actuator can be used as a torsional joint in soft robots to perform various tasks.

Bending analysis and contact force modeling of soft pneumatic actuators with pleated structures

Guoliang Zhong et al.

Summary: Soft pneumatic actuators with pleated structures have advantages in low input pressure, high bending speed, and large-amplitude motion, but modeling their behavior is challenging due to discontinuity of pleated structures and material nonlinearity. This paper proposes an analytical model based on the constant volume principle and Neo-Hookean hyperelasticity theory to predict the bending angle and tip contact force of the soft actuator, which is validated through physical experiments and FEM simulations. The experimental study demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed analytical model in predicting the bending angle and tip contact force of the soft actuators.

Design, Characterization and Optimization of Multi-directional Bending Pneumatic Artificial Muscles

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: A Multi-directional Bending Pneumatic Artificial Muscle (MBPAM) capable of bending in eight directions was fabricated, with a maximum bending angle of 151 degrees and output force of 0.643 N under a pressure of 100 kPa. The Finite Element Model (FEM) was used to investigate performance, revealing that optimization of wave amplitude and base layer thickness can enhance bending performance. Multi-objective optimization increased output force by 7.8% or bending angle by 8.6% while maintaining the initial design. Grasp tests demonstrated the gripping capability of the MBPAM in soft robots, showing promising application prospects.

Controlling bending deformation of a shape memory alloy-based soft planar gripper to grip deformable objects

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The study presents an alternative approach to control the deformation of a soft planar gripper based on shape memory alloy (SMA) without the need for integrated sensors. Instead of using flexible sensors, a camera as a vision sensor is utilized to detect bending deformation of the soft finger, enabling the gripper to grasp deformable objects with desired deformation. With the implementation of a PID control system, the soft finger can achieve the desired deformation automatically.

Cooperative collapse of helical structure enables the actuation of twisting pneumatic artificial muscle

Wei Xiao et al.

Summary: Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) are widely used in soft robots as flexible actuators. Twisting pneumatic artificial muscles (TPAMs) can generate torsional motion, enhancing the flexibility and mobility of soft robots. This study developed high-performance TPAMs with a bigger torsion angle and lower working pressure, and the effects of structure parameters on torsion performance were studied using finite element models and surrogate models. The results indicate that increasing the height and relative rotation angle can improve the torsion angle and output torque.

Summary: In this paper, a multi-degree of freedom BPAM capable of bending in three-dimensional space and extending its soft body is designed. A static analytical model is proposed to predict bending angles, which shows good agreement with experimental and numerical results. The developed model can reliably estimate bending angles of BPAM with different geometric parameters, and has potential applications in three-dimensional motion and manipulation.
