Brittle-ductile transition behavior of 6H-SiC in oblique diamond cutting

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel machining method named oblique diamond cutting is used to improve the brittle-ductile transition behavior of 6H-SiC. The tool edge ovalization effect is proposed to provide insight into the change in cutting edge shape. Experimental results and finite element simulation indicate that oblique diamond cutting significantly increases the brittle-ductile transition depth.

Molecular simulation of the plastic deformation and crack formation in single grit grinding of 4H-SiC single crystal

Shang Gao et al.

Summary: This work investigated the deformation and crack formation of monocrystalline 4H-SiC involved in single grit grinding using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The mechanism for crack initiation and propagation in mono-crystalline 4H-SiC was revealed for the first time. Stress analysis demonstrated the driving forces and propagation directions of the cracks.

Surface deformation, phase transition and dislocation mechanisms of single crystalline 6H-SiC in oblique nano-cutting

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: Compared with conventional orthogonal cutting, this study systematically investigates the oblique nano-cutting of 6H-SiC by tilting the tool at different angles through molecular dynamics simulations. The deformation mechanism, surface deformation, and cutting force variation are studied, and the transition path of amorphization is clarified. Dislocation analysis reveals that basal dislocation systems dominate the behavior, while in oblique nano-cutting, the basal 1/3 < 1 (1) over bar 00> Shockley partial dislocation of 6H-SiC is more activated due to the inclined-cutting-edge-derived shear stress.

Formation of high density stacking faults in polycrystalline 3C-SiC by vibration-assisted diamond cutting

Liang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reveals the ductile deformation mechanisms and microstructure evolution of 3C-SiC ceramic material during ultrasonic elliptical vibration-assisted diamond cutting. The formation of highly oriented high density stacking faults, along with suppressed amorphization and cracking, contributes to enhanced ductile material removal. Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations are used to elucidate the phase transformation and microstructure evolution mechanisms.

Atomistic origin of brittle-to-ductile transition behavior of polycrystalline 3C-SiC in diamond cutting

Liang Zhao et al.

Summary: The machinability of hard brittle polycrystalline ceramic is closely related to its internal microstructures and deformation behavior. The study reveals the mechanisms governing the brittle-to-ductile transition behavior of polycrystalline 3C-SiC in diamond cutting, including dislocation slip, amorphization-dominated ductile deformation, and grain boundaries-mediated brittle fracture. The competitive co-existence of various deformation modes determines the brittle-to-ductile transition behavior in grooving of polycrystalline 3C-SiC.
