Infectious disease in an era of global change

Rachel E. Baker et al.

Summary: Global changes such as climate change, urbanization, and global travel and trade have impacted the emergence and spread of infectious diseases. Recent decades have seen a wave of severe infectious disease outbreaks, including COVID-19 and Zika virus disease, which have had devastating effects worldwide.

Population density estimates for terrestrial mammal species

Luca Santini et al.

Summary: This study provides predictions of average population density, their natural variability, and statistical uncertainty for 4,925 terrestrial mammal species using a large-scale dataset. The results show that small body size, fossorial behavior, and herbivorous diets are associated with higher population densities, while large size, aerial behavior, and carnivorous diets are related to lower densities. These predictions and uncertainty estimates have various applications in macroecology and conservation biogeography, such as biomass estimation, conservation assessments, and Red List assessments.

Q Fever as a Cause of Community-Acquired Pneumonia in French Guiana

Loic Epelboin et al.

Summary: In French Guiana, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is primarily caused by Coxiella burnetii infection. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Q fever pneumonia and identify new clinical characteristics and risk factors. A retrospective case-control study was conducted on CAP patients admitted to Cayenne Hospital between 2009 and 2012. The study found that Q fever accounted for 38.5% of CAP cases, the highest prevalence reported worldwide. Living in Cayenne area, being aged 30-60 years, CRP > 185 mg/L, and leukocyte count < 10 G/L were identified as independent risk factors for Q fever.

Novel Chronic Anaplasmosis in Splenectomized Patient, Amazon Rainforest

Olivier Duron et al.

Summary: A case of unusual human anaplasmosis in the Amazon rainforest of French Guiana is reported. Molecular typing revealed that the pathogen is a novel Anaplasma species, distinct from all known species, and more genetically related to recently discovered Anaplasma spp. causing infections in rainforest wild fauna of Brazil.

Characteristics, potentials, and challenges of transdisciplinary research

Mark G. Lawrence et al.

Summary: Resolving the grand challenges and wicked problems of the Anthropocene requires a transdisciplinary approach. This article provides an overview and perspective for disciplinary and interdisciplinary researchers to efficiently understand the concept, characteristics, and model of transdisciplinarity. It also discusses the challenges faced by transdisciplinary research in addressing the broader challenges of the Anthropocene and proposes approaches to deal with these challenges based on practical experiences.

Ecology, evolution, and epidemiology of zoonotic and vector-borne infectious diseases in French Guiana: Transdisciplinarity does matter to tackle new emerging threats

Benoit de Thoisy et al.

Summary: French Guiana is a European ultraperipheric region located on the northern Atlantic coast of South America. Although sparsely populated, it is an important forested region for biological conservation in the Neotropics. Research has shown a complex epidemiological landscape in the area, with important transitional changes facilitated by various factors such as wildlife, human activities, and sociodemographic development.

The one health landscape in Sub-Saharan African countries

Folorunso O. Fasina et al.

Summary: The study found that One Health networks and initiatives are widely distributed in Africa, but there is an imbalance in stakeholder representation; future efforts should focus on enhancing the promotion and implementation of One Health policies, promoting theoretical transformation, and establishing monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
