Synthesis and characterisation of a ceria-based cobalt-zinc anode nanocomposite for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs)

Mehdi Choolaei et al.

Summary: This study reports for the first time that nano-crystalline Co1-x-Znx-Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 (x = 0.50 and 0.65) anode powders can offer a practical solution for Ni-free low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs; 450-550 degrees C) by exhibiting high redox capabilities below 400 degrees C. An anode-electrolyte bilayer with tailored electrical conductivity is fabricated by co-sintering a Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 disc (as support) and the synthesized Co1-x-Znx-Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 anode powder. Zinc can increase the cell power-density by about five times compared to Co-based anode composites.

Synthesis and characterization of CeAlO3 via solid state method

Xiang Zheng et al.

Summary: High-purity CeAlO3 product was synthesized through the solid-state method with low oxygen partial pressure and excess carbon. The morphology and structure of the product were investigated using various techniques. The synthesized CeAlO3 product exhibited green color and belonged to the P4/mmm space group. Raman spectroscopy indicated the presence of three active modes at approximately 156 cm-1, 173 cm-1, and 496 cm-1. CeAlO3 nucleated at the contact surface between formed Ce2O3 and Al2O3, with further promotion of formation and compositional homogeneity through lattice diffusion.

Experimental and DFT study on cerium inclusions in clean steels

Xiangjun Liu et al.

Summary: By investigating the evolution process of Ce-O-S-Al inclusions in clean steels using thermodynamic calculation, metallographic examination and first-principles calculation, this study provided insights into improving mechanical properties of steels. The research showed that the differences in hardness, toughness, brittleness, and thermal expansion coefficient between Ce inclusions and iron matrix could explain the enhancement of mechanical properties in the tested steel.
