Heat transfer and melt flow of keyhole, transition and conduction modes in laser beam oscillating welding

Wenchao Ke et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the significant effects of melting modes on heat transfer and fluid flow in laser beam oscillating welding (LBOW), and their influence on welding quality and solidification microstructure. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is developed to study LBOW of 2219 aluminum alloy under different welding modes. The results show that the melting mode changes from keyhole to conduction mode with increasing oscillating frequency. Our work provides a foundation for optimizing the LBOW process to achieve sound joints.

Interfacial microstructure and strengthening mechanism of dissimilar laser al/steel joint via a porous high entropy alloy coating

Min Zheng et al.

Summary: A porous high entropy alloy (HEA) coating was prepared on a steel surface by vacuum sintering and used as a transition layer during dissimilar laser joining of Al to steel. The coating improved the wettability and spreadability of the molten filler wire on the substrate, resulting in increased brazed width and reduced contact angle. The use of the coating also led to the formation of a composite-like microstructure, gradient nanocrystalline layer, and improved fracture load and displacement in the laser joints.

Spatial and directional characterization of wire and arc additive manufactured aluminum alloy using phased array ultrasonic backscattering method

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a phased array ultrasonic method to characterize the inhomogeneity and anisotropy in metallic materials fabricated by additive manufacturing. The backscattering intensity and root mean square of the backscattering signals are used to quantify the microstructural inhomogeneity and anisotropy, respectively. Experimental results on wire and arc additively manufactured aluminum alloy show that the sample is inhomogeneous and weakly anisotropic.

Multi-physics simulation of wobbling laser melting injection of aluminum alloy with SiC particles: SiC particles gradient distribution in fusion zone

Boan Xu et al.

Summary: A novel process of wobbling laser melting injection (WLMI) is proposed to improve the distribution uniformity of SiC particles in the fusion zone of aluminum alloy. Both experimental and simulated results indicate a significant improvement in particle distribution uniformity under WLMI compared to LMI, and the physical mechanisms behind this phenomenon are more thoroughly understood through the developed model.

Improving laser welding via decreasing central beam density with a hollow beam

Quanhong Li et al.

Summary: This paper proposes the use of a hollow beam with less central beam density to improve the welding quality in laser welding process. Numerical simulation shows that the hollow beam can reduce the depth of the keyhole and velocity fluctuations. Experimental results demonstrate that the hollow beam welding can effectively suppress spatters and pores, and refine the microstructure of the weld.

Keyhole dynamic status and spatter behavior during welding of stainless steel with adjustable-ring mode laser beam

Lin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel adjustable-ring mode laser welding of SUS304L stainless steel sheet was investigated. The pure circular laser beam generated a periodic opening and collapsing keyhole with plenty of spatters in the welding process, while the pure ring laser beam generated a continuously opening keyhole-inlet. The dual-mode ring/circular laser (ARM laser) maintained a relatively opening keyhole with a smaller number of spatters compared to pure circular laser welding, showing potential for high-quality industrial manufacturing processes.

Droplet spatter suppression in laser lap welding of galvanized sheets using additional coaxial annular laser source

Yi Qi et al.

Summary: This study aims to prevent droplet spatter in laser welding of galvanized sheets. Through the analysis of a three-dimensional welding simulation model, the relationship between keyhole oscillation and flow behavior is revealed. It is found that the major reason for droplet spatter is the impact force of the reflux and eddy of the metal pool toward the keyhole. However, using a certain output proportion of coaxial annular and Gaussian laser source can significantly improve the problem.

Zhejun Tan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of employing an S-curve laser power to improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of laser oscillating welded joints in 5A06 aluminum alloy. The results show that using the S-curve power allows for the production of good joints with refined grain structure and improved mechanical properties compared to constant power. The tensile strength of the joints using the S-curve power was increased by 35.3% and showed higher ductility and good plasticity.

Effects of energy density attenuation on the stability of keyhole and molten pool during deep penetration laser welding process: A combined numerical and experimental study

Yilin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of energy density attenuation on the welding process using innovative characterizing methods and a multiphase model. It reveals the phenomenon of alternate melting between the keyhole wall and bottom due to energy density attenuation, as well as its correlation with molten pool fluctuations. Regulating the movement of protrusions can improve molten pool stability. Adjusting beam defocus and inclination is proposed as an optimization method to enhance welding stability.
