Vapor condensation on micropillar structured surface with lattice Boltzmann method

Xiangwei Yin et al.

Summary: This study numerically simulates the condensation process and heat transfer on micropillar structured surfaces with different wettabilities. The results reveal that the corner between micropillar sides and subcooled substrate, as well as the center of substrate, are favorable droplet nucleation sites. Moreover, it is found that as the contact angle increases, nucleation of condensate is delayed, the departure diameter is reduced, and departure frequency is increased. The study also presents an optimal heat transfer surface configuration based on the research findings.

Distinct condensation droplet distribution patterns under low- and high-frequency electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) effect

Run Yan et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the distinct droplet distribution patterns of open-plate grid-wire-patterned EWOD devices under low and high frequencies of AC-EWOD. It found that at low frequencies, droplets stayed inside the grid, while at high frequencies, droplets adhered to the grid wires. The dynamics of single droplets were studied, revealing two different oscillation modes and their impact on droplet coalescence mechanisms and distribution patterns.

Summary: The study shows that despite contact angle hysteresis and random drop coalescence events, the preferential drop positions closely follow numerically calculated local minima of electrostatic energy for variable drop size. This quantitative understanding provides important insights for improving heat transfer performance in various applications.

Capillary transfer: Numerical study of how topology affects the fluid flow rate into a planar microstructure with pseudopotential multiphase Lattice-Boltzmann method

Robin Pham et al.

Summary: The impact of topology on capillary action in heat pipes and vapor chambers was studied to optimize thermal performance. Different planar topologies of thermal ground were evaluated for their ability to facilitate liquid transportation, with tightly packed structures shown to draw the most liquid in the same amount of time. It was found that sufficient clearance between structures and freedom of mobility are two core constraints that need to be met for efficient capillary performance.

Summary: This work introduces a new technology for actuating droplets without the need for high voltages or active control systems. Through experiments, it has been demonstrated that this technology is feasible on various platforms. The technology not only has potential applications in microfluidics, but also in industries such as automotive for self-cleaning platforms.
