Contemporary evaluation of women and girls with abnormal uterine bleeding: FIGO Systems 1 and 2

Varsha Jain et al.

Summary: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common and debilitating condition that affects more than 50% of reproductive-aged women and girls. It includes symptoms such as intermenstrual bleeding and abnormalities in period duration, cycle length, and regularity. Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is the most significant contributor to iron deficiency and anemia. The FIGO Systems 1 and 2 provide a comprehensive approach to assess and classify AUB, improving diagnosis and management outcomes globally.

Iron deficiency, pregnancy, and neonatal development

Ricardo Ataide et al.

Summary: Anemia affects 36% of pregnant women worldwide, with around 40% of cases being due to iron deficiency. Iron deficiency has negative impacts on placental development and iron uptake, fetal development and immunity, as well as maternal and infant susceptibility to infection.

The importance of iron deficiency in pregnancy on fetal, neonatal, and infant neurodevelopmental outcomes

Michael K. Georgieff

Summary: The role of iron in neurodevelopment and the adverse effects of early-life iron deficiency on brain development and function have been extensively studied. Recent research has highlighted the importance of maternal preconceptional iron status and fetal iron accretion in determining offspring's iron status and brain health throughout life. This paradigm shift in thinking has linked previously separate literatures on neonatal and postnatal iron deficiency. Understanding the impact of fetal iron accretion on postnatal iron balance has emphasized the need for proper fetal iron loading. This article reviews fetal iron metabolism, the role of iron in fetal brain development, the neurobehavioral consequences of fetal iron underloading, and the potential mechanisms underlying the long-term effects of fetal/neonatal iron deficiency.

Analysis of Adverse Events and Intravenous Iron Infusion Formulations in Adults With and Without Prior Infusion Reactions

Asad H. Arastu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the rates of infusion reactions among different intravenous iron repletion strategies and the management of readministration in patients with history of reaction. The results showed that intravenous iron is generally well tolerated with exceedingly low risk of severe reactions, and the use of premedication and test doses are unnecessary.

Non-anemic iron deficiency predicts prolonged hospitalisation following surgical aortic valve replacement: a single-centre retrospective study

Matthew C. Frise et al.

Summary: This study found that using soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) rather than ferritin to define non-anemic iron deficiency predicts prolonged hospitalization in patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement. Further studies are needed to clarify the role of contemporary laboratory indices in identifying preoperative iron deficiency in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Iron-Deficiency Prevalence and Supplementation Practices Among Pregnant Women: A Secondary Data Analysis From a Clinical Trial in Vancouver, Canada

Kelsey M. Cochrane et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess iron status in early and late pregnancy among pregnant women receiving 27 mg/day of elemental iron. The results showed that despite consuming the recommended amount of iron, there were high rates of iron deficiency. Ethnicity was the only significant factor affecting ferritin concentrations.

Summary: Research shows that early infant iron deficiency may lead to long-lasting deficits in cognition, memory, executive function, and electrophysiology, but the current recommendation from the United States Preventative Services Task Force is not to routinely provide iron supplementation or screen for iron deficiency.

Suboptimal iron deficiency screening in pregnancy and the impact of socioeconomic status in a high-resource setting

Jennifer Teichman et al.

Summary: The proportion of pregnant patients receiving ferritin testing is relatively low, with most tests being done in the first trimester, although a significant number of patients experience iron insufficiency and anemia during pregnancy. Lower income is associated with higher odds of ferritin testing, suggesting gaps in prenatal care and issues of health equity.
