Summary: The role of iron in neurodevelopment and the adverse effects of early-life iron deficiency on brain development and function have been extensively studied. Recent research has highlighted the importance of maternal preconceptional iron status and fetal iron accretion in determining offspring's iron status and brain health throughout life. This paradigm shift in thinking has linked previously separate literatures on neonatal and postnatal iron deficiency. Understanding the impact of fetal iron accretion on postnatal iron balance has emphasized the need for proper fetal iron loading. This article reviews fetal iron metabolism, the role of iron in fetal brain development, the neurobehavioral consequences of fetal iron underloading, and the potential mechanisms underlying the long-term effects of fetal/neonatal iron deficiency.

Further research is needed to understand the partitioning of iron between these compartments.

The Influence of Nutritional Supplementation for Iron Deficiency Anemia on Pregnancies Associated with SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Summary: Anemia is common during pregnancy, and it is considered a risk factor for severity and negative outcomes in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. A study was conducted to determine the impact of nutritional supplementation for iron deficiency anemia in correlation with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that iron deficiency anemia was significantly higher in pregnant women with COVID-19 and was associated with low birth weight, prematurity, and lower APGAR scores. Nutritional supplementation with iron and folate during pregnancy was found to normalize birth weight. It is important to screen for iron and folate deficiency in pregnant women at risk and supplement their nutritional intake to promote normal development and avoid complications during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Iron status of full-term infants in early infancy is not associated with maternal ferritin levels nor infant feeding practice

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between maternal ferritin levels and cord blood serum ferritin, as well as compare ferritin levels in early infancy under different feeding practices. The results showed that maternal iron deficiency was common, but maternal ferritin levels were not significantly correlated with cord blood serum ferritin concentrations or infant ferritin concentrations at 3 months of age.

Summary: This overview of systematic reviews summarized the evidence on the impact of COVID-19 on maternal and child health, indicating that pregnant women with COVID-19 may face increased risks of adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. The most common clinical findings during pregnancy included fever, respiratory symptoms, raised C-reactive protein, lymphopenia, and pneumonia signs. Babies born to mothers with COVID-19 were most commonly asymptomatic, but may also experience fever, low birth weight, or preterm delivery. The odds of receiving invasive ventilation for COVID-19 pregnant women was 1.88 times higher than non-COVID-19 pregnant women, with a 3.13 times higher odds of their babies being admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.
