An experimental investigation into fatigue behaviors of single- and double-sided U rib welds in orthotropic bridge decks

Haibo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue resistance properties of single- and double-sided welded joints in OBD using the traction structural stress method. Experimental and numerical investigations are conducted, and full-scale fatigue specimen tests are performed to analyze the fatigue property validations and failure modes. The study recommends a specific united master S-N curve for the fatigue performance prediction of single- and double-sided welded joints in OBDs.

A new orthotropic steel deck system incorporating two novel structural details

Le-tian Da et al.

Summary: This study proposed two novel structural details to improve the fatigue resistance of orthotropic steel decks (OSDs). By eliminating crack-like defects and transferring stress ranges, these novel structural details can enhance the fatigue performance of rib-to-deck and rib-to-floorbeam welded joints.

Machine Learning-Assisted probabilistic fatigue evaluation of Rib-to-Deck joints in orthotropic steel decks

Junlin Heng et al.

Summary: This study integrates fatigue testing and numerical prediction to derive a comprehensive probability-stress-life (P-S-N) curve for rib-to-deck (RD) welded joints in orthotropic steel decks. The study establishes a probabilistic fatigue crack growth (PFCG) model and uses machine-learning tools to assist in the prediction. The results show improved agreement between the model prediction and test data, with a significant reduction in solution cost.

Analysis of fatigue test conditions for reproducing weld toe cracking into U-rib wall in orthotropic bridge decks

Haibo Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue test conditions for reproducing weld toe cracking into U-rib wall in orthotropic bridge decks using both experimental and numerical methods. The traction structural stress method is proven effective in evaluating this fatigue failure mode (referred to as toe-U rib) and its associated test conditions. Experimental validations consistently observed the toe-U rib failure mode, and it was found that variations in weld penetration do not impact the failure mode and its fatigue capability.

Fatigue crack growth behavior of rib-to-deck double-sided welded joints of orthotropic steel decks

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the three-dimensional mixed mode fatigue crack growth behavior of rib-to-deck double-sided welded joints of OSDs through numerical simulation. The equivalent SIF shows complex variations during the growth stage, and the final crack shape exhibits characteristics of a spatial curved surface. Initial crack geometry significantly impacts the fatigue life of the welded joints.

Experimental fatigue assessment of connections between plate-type longitudinal ribs and non-slit transverse ribs in orthotropic steel decks

Koichi Yokozeki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fatigue strength of the connection between longitudinal and transverse ribs using a method proposed in previous studies. It confirmed that the fatigue performance of the connection can be assessed by the hot-spot stress approach and the fatigue design curve of FAT 80. Residual stress at the weld toes was found to affect the fatigue strength, and applying FAT 80 for evaluation is recommended for safe assessment.

Stress behaviors of rib-to-deck double-sided weld detail on orthotropic steel deck

Zhiwen Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated stress behaviors at a rib-to-deck double-sided weld detail through controlled truck loading tests on a long-span cable-stayed bridge. Results showed that stress at the detail was dominated by significant local effects, with higher stress range at the outside weld compared to the inner weld. Finite element analysis indicated that the riding-rib-wall loading was the most critical transverse loading location.

Experimental study on the root-deck fatigue crack on orthotropic steel decks

Dalei Wang et al.

Summary: The root-deck crack is a significant fatigue issue on OSDs, impacting bridge serviceability and being challenging to detect. Fatigue testing and microscopic examination identified lack of penetration at the weld root and high stress as key factors in crack initiation and propagation. Comparing with other fatigue test results, differences between root-deck crack and toe-deck crack failures were highlighted, providing insights for improved fatigue design of OSDs.
