Anisotropic thermomechanical fatigue of a nickel-base single-crystal superalloy Part I: Effects of crystal orientations and damage mechanisms

Cheng Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermomechanical fatigue behavior of nickel-base single-crystal superalloy with different crystal orientations. The crack initiation modes and damage mechanisms were characterized using SEM and optical microscopy. In IP-TMF, creep damage originated from casting pores and propagated under mode I. The creep facets were influenced by activated slip systems, while fatigue damage depended on crystal orientation and developed by slipping along different crystallographic planes. In OP-TMF tests, oxidation-assisted cracking was non-crystallographic for all crystal orientations, with the crack growing within the oxidized material.

Planar-biaxial low-cycle fatigue behavior of the nickel-base alloy Inconel 718 at elevated temperatures under selected loading conditions

Marco Boecker et al.

Summary: In this study, the isothermal planar-biaxial fatigue behavior of two batches of nickel-base superalloy Inconel 718 was investigated under equi-biaxial and shear loading at two different temperatures. The test results were compared with uniaxial reference tests and analyzed. The use of a modified crack-opening-displacement strain range approach showed better description of fatigue lifetimes, and the crack initiation was found to occur at oxidized primary carbides on the surface.

A life prediction method and damage assessment for creep-fatigue combined with high-low cyclic loading

Kai-Shang Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes an energy-based model to predict the creep-fatigue combined with high-low cyclic loading (CF-HL) life, taking into account the interactions between different damage modes. Experimental results validate the prediction capabilities of the model, and a new assessment method based on a three-dimensional damage interaction diagram is proposed.

A fully coupled chemo-mechanical cohesive zone model for oxygen embrittlement of nickel-based

Kim Louisa Auth et al.

Summary: A fully coupled thermodynamically consistent chemo-mechanical modeling framework is proposed to explain the accelerated crack propagation of nickel-based superalloys in high temperatures and oxygen-rich environments. The model incorporates the reduction of grain boundary strength due to the presence of oxygen and the enhancement of oxygen diffusion under tensile mechanical loading. Experimental and numerical simulation results validate the effectiveness of the model.

High-temperature effects on creep-fatigue interaction of the Alloy 709 austenitic stainless steel

Zeinab Y. Alsmadi et al.

Summary: High-temperature creep-fatigue behavior of Alloy 709 was investigated through strain-controlled tests at 650°C and 750°C, revealing fluctuations in creep-fatigue life at 650°C due to Dynamic Strain Aging. Linear damage summation (LDS) was used to create a creep-fatigue interaction diagram, showing increased crack and creep cavity density at 750°C compared to 650°C.

The influence of oxygen partial pressure on the crack propagation of superalloy under fatigue-creep-environment interaction

Summary: Low oxygen partial pressure significantly affects the dwell fatigue crack growth rate of 718Plus alloy at high temperatures. The dominant mechanisms include oxygen-induced dynamic embrittlement and stress-accelerated grain boundary oxidation, with the type of oxide formed in the process directly related to oxygen partial pressure and oxidation time.

Thermomechanical fatigue behaviour and damage mechanisms in a 9% Cr steel: Effect of strain rate

Peng Yin et al.

Summary: In this study, TMF tests were conducted to investigate the cyclic deformation and damage mechanisms of P92 steel under different strain rates. The results showed that increasing strain rate significantly improved fatigue life, with OP-TMF leading to more severe damage compared to IP-TMF. The presence of dynamic strain ageing (DSA) was found to be dependent on strain rate, fatigue cycle, and phase angle, affecting fatigue life in combination with fatigue cracks, creep voids, and oxidation.

Cycle-dependent creep-fatigue deformation and life predictions in a nickel-based superalloy at elevated temperature

Lv-Yi Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the strain-controlled creep-fatigue behavior of a nickel-based superalloy at 650 degrees C, using a non-unified constitutive framework to describe the macroscopic cyclic deformation process and quantitatively evaluating creep-fatigue damage using the cycle-by-cycle strain energy density exhaustion approach. The proposed life model effectively revealed the effects of strain ratio and dwell time on creep-fatigue life endurances, with all data points predicted within +/- 1.5 error band. Improved life prediction capacities were observed for long dwell times based on the three-regime creep mechanism.
