Re-recognition of deep spalling damage mechanism of rolling contact fatigue under heavy load

Zhuofan Xia et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed analysis of the nucleation and propagation of surface-initiated crack in rolling contact fatigue (RCF) of bearing steel under heavy load. The cracks initiated from the junction of machining marks and trailing edge of dents formed by the plastic deformation. Different from previous understanding on the formation of subsurface-initiated spalling, the results indicate that under heavy load the spalling at depth of the maximum shear stress zone in the subsurface can initiate from surface cracks.

Mechanistic driving force for martensite decay in rolling contact fatigue

Predrag Andric et al.

Summary: Martensite decay due to large scale microstructural alterations is the main fatigue process in bearing applications. The study demonstrates that the decay is mainly driven by the positive components of the principal subsurface stress tensor. The analysis provides mechanistic insights into why the fastest material decay occurs at specific depths.

A peridynamic study on the effects of surface topography on rolling contact fatigue

Lanwen Wang et al.

Summary: A peridynamic fatigue simulation model is developed to study the effect of surface topography on rolling contact fatigue. The crack evolution and fatigue life of the model including different dents and roughness are analyzed. The results show that cracks initiate from the shoulders of the dent and form spalling at the trailing edge.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed mechanistic study of the evolution of ferrite grains and carbide structures in white etching bands (WEB) formed in angular contact ball bearings. The results suggest that the formation of WEB is associated with the recrystallization and plastic deformation of ferrite grains.

A continuum damage mechanics finite element model for investigating effects of surface roughness on rolling contact fatigue

Steven J. Lorenz et al.

Summary: In this study, a CDM FE model was developed to investigate the effects of surface roughness on RCF life, using optical surface profilometer to measure roughness of deep groove bearings. The results showed that as roughness amplitude increases or lambda ratio decreases, fatigue lives decrease for various frequencies. Subsurface failure fatigue lives are reduced with increasing roughness frequency, regardless of amplitude or Hertzian pressure. The investigation results were used to develop surface roughness effects for RCF life equations in rolling element bearing applications.

Broad review of White Etching Crack failure in wind turbine gearbox bearings: Main factors and experimental investigations

Fernando Jose Lopez-Urunuela et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the phenomenon of White Etching Cracks (WEC) which are subsurface crack networks surrounded by microstructural alterations that lead to premature failures of wind turbine gearbox bearings (WTGB). The study observes that in the majority of tests where WEC is generated, three drivers usually appear and act synergistically: non-metallic inclusions, sliding, and hydrogen.

An approach for predicting failure mechanism in rough surface rolling contact fatigue

Steven J. Lorenz et al.

Summary: A finite element model was developed to investigate the influence of near surface orthogonal shear stress on the competitive failure mechanism between surface originated pitting and subsurface originated spalling. The results indicate that roughness frequency and half contact width are the main parameters controlling the probability of surface failure, with low frequency surfaces more susceptible to surface failure.
