Impedance-Based Online Estimation of Nodal Inertia and Primary Frequency Regulation Capability

Wuqi Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an online estimation method for evaluating the inertia and primary frequency regulation (PFR) capability of a power source node using impedance-based techniques. By injecting small perturbations, a novel approximation relationship between impedance and the frequency response transfer function (FR(s)) is derived. The magnitude response curve of FR(s), including the resonance frequency and DC gain, is then used to estimate the nodal inertia and PFR capability in real time.

Power system inertia estimation: Review of methods and the impacts of converter-interfaced generations

Bendong Tan et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively summarizes inertia definitions and estimation methods for synchronous generators and converter-interfaced generation, categorizing them into model-based and measurement-based approaches. A framework to quantify the virtual inertia of CIGs is provided for the first time, addressing an open problem in the literature. Future directions for inertia estimation are identified, which can benefit the design of control and protection schemes for a more reliable and secure power system.

Encoding Frequency Constraints in Preventive Unit Commitment Using Deep Learning With Region-of-Interest Active Sampling

Yichen Zhang et al.

Summary: With the increasing penetration of renewable energy, ensuring frequency response and its security in power system operations has become a significant concern. This paper proposes a data-driven framework using deep neural networks to predict frequency response and incorporates it into unit commitment. The framework improves the accuracy of frequency constraints by considering all possible power injections and implementing a region-of-interest active sampling. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated on the IEEE 39-bus system and validated through full-order dynamic model simulations using PSS/E.

Primary Frequency Support in Unit Commitment Using a Multi-Area Frequency Model With Flywheel Energy Storage

Salar Saberi Oskouee et al.

Summary: The paper presents a Frequency Stability Constrained Unit Commitment (FSCUC) model which optimizes generating unit on/off status, generation levels, and operating reserves to minimize daily operational costs. The proposed model includes frequency stability constraints to ensure the safety of System Frequency Response (SFR) under sudden generation outages. A new multi-area SFR model is introduced to capture regional dynamics with considerations for transmission network impacts and the use of Flywheel Energy Storage (FES) devices.

Changjiang Wang et al.

Summary: The research adopts a convolutional neural network for rapid frequency security assessment. By establishing a mapping relationship between time series features and frequency security indicators through deep learning structures, the complex construction process is avoided. The evaluation accuracy is optimized by tuning key parameters, demonstrating the anti-interference performance of the proposed model through data analysis, and finally verifying the effectiveness of the method through case studies.

Inertia Emulation Uncorrelated With Electromechanical Dynamics to Improve Frequency Transients Using Center of Inertia (COI) Frequency Signal

Deping Ke et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an inertia emulation method that utilizes the frequency of the center of inertia as the feedback signal to slow down frequency changes and raise the frequency nadir during dropping events. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving frequency transients and its limited correlation with the electromechanical dynamics of the system.
