A new statistical damage model for true triaxial pre-and post-peak behaviors of rock considering intermediate principal stress and initial compaction effects

Zhi Zheng et al.

Summary: This research conducted true triaxial compression tests to study the influence of sigma(2) and sigma(3) on the mechanical properties of marble in deep underground engineering excavation. It found that sigma(2) and sigma(3) affect the peak strength, crack initiation stress, and damage stress of the rock, while the variation of residual strength is different from that of peak strength. Furthermore, increasing sigma(2) or decreasing sigma(3) reduces the pre-peak plasticity of the rock and significantly changes the shape of the post-peak curve.

A new fractional-order model for time-dependent damage of rock under true triaxial stresses

Zhi Zheng et al.

Summary: This study establishes a new fractional-order damage element and a fractional-order creep damage model for rocks under true triaxial stresses, based on the understanding of their time-dependent mechanical properties. The proposed model is verified and shows good agreement with experimental results, indicating its wide applicability and rationality. The study also investigates the sensitivity of the true triaxial stress states and model parameters to creep characteristics. The research provides a theoretical basis for predicting time-dependent disasters and analyzing the long-term stability of surrounding rock in deep engineering.

A thermodynamic damage model for 3D stress-induced mechanical characteristics and brittle-ductile transition of rock

Zhi Zheng et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of true triaxial tests to investigate the effects of sigma(2) and sigma(3) on the characteristic strength, post-peak deformation, and brittle-ductile behavior of rock. Based on the test results, a three-dimensional elastoplastic damage constitutive model was developed to describe the plastic hardening and damage softening of rock. The model was numerically implemented and validated through numerical simulation experiments. The study also predicted the brittle-ductile transition of marble under untested true triaxial stress levels.

True triaxial test and PFC3D-GBM simulation study on mechanical properties and fracture evolution mechanisms of rock under high stresses

Zhi Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, laboratory tests and numerical simulations were conducted on deeply buried marble to investigate the complex 3D high-stress redistribution that occurs in the surrounding rock. A new 3DGBM numerical model method was proposed to incorporate the mineral composition and grain size distribution characteristics of the marble. The effects of different stress states on the mechanical properties and micro-failure mechanisms of marble were systematically studied, including intergranular and transgranular micro-failure of mineral grains, microcrack propagation processes, and tensile-shear mechanisms induced by true triaxial stresses.

Experimental study on the permeability evolution of argillaceous sandstone under elevated temperatures

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: Coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical triaxial flow-through tests were conducted to investigate the effect of elevated temperatures on the permeability evolution and stress sensitivity of a typical argillaceous sandstone from Zhongjiang Gas field in the Sichuan Basin, China. Experimental results showed that the initial permeability gradually decreased with increasing temperature, with a magnitude of up to 1.5 orders. Stress sensitivity was negatively correlated with temperature levels. The permeability reduction was mainly caused by thermal expansion of illite and pore-filling and throat-clogging effects.

Propagation behavior of hydraulic fractures in shale under triaxial compression considering the influence of sandstone layers

Lei Yang et al.

Summary: Shale-sandstone interbedded reservoirs are abundant in China with huge natural gas reserves, but their uniqueness poses great challenges for hydraulic fracturing design. Laboratory tests were conducted to simulate the hydraulic fracturing process in horizontal wells under true triaxial compression using rock specimens. The study investigated the spatial morphology and influence mechanism of hydraulic fractures considering factors such as stress state, sandstone proportion, and natural fractures. The influence of sandstone layers on hydraulic fracture propagation behavior was further investigated using acoustic emission (AE) monitoring and real-time water pressure monitoring. The research results provide theoretical support for the efficient exploitation of shale-sandstone interbedded reservoirs.

A modeling approach to stress-dependent porosity and permeability decays of rocks

Teng Su et al.

Summary: The porosity or permeability of rocks varies significantly depending on stress, which is a crucial factor in resource exploitation and geological storage engineering. However, the stress-porosity/permeability relationships can be quite different due to various factors. This study proposes a fractional-order relaxation equation based on the physical interpretation of microstructural evolution in rocks, which accurately describes the effective stress-porosity/permeability relationships using the Mittag-Leffler (ML) law. The ML law shows better agreement with experimental data, especially in cases with heavy tail characteristics, compared to the exponential and power-law models.

Yao Bai et al.

Summary: By conducting triaxial creep tests on frozen red sandstone, the creep instability law of ice-filled, fractured red sandstone under freezing and triaxial stress conditions was studied. A nonlinear visco-elastoplastic constitutive model was established, and it was found that the flaw dip angle significantly affects the initial creep property, unstable creep property, and creep failure mode.

Seepage characteristics of chemical grout flow in porous sandstone with a fracture under different temperature conditions: An NMR based experimental investigation

Yuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the seepage processes of chemical grout flow in fractured rock under various temperatures and confining pressures using low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) testing technique. The results showed that the viscosity of the grout exhibited time-dependent and temperature-dependent characteristics, and the flow pattern was greatly influenced by injection pressure and less affected by temperature. Additionally, the permeability of the sandstone increased with higher injection pressure and lower temperature.

Coupled seepage-damage effect in fractured rock masses: model development and a case study

Yanlin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a dual-medium model to study the coupled seepage-damage effect in fractured rock masses, focusing on the impact of high-pressure water injection in a coal seam. The results show that the seepage pressure increases faster in the discrete fracture medium during the initial stage of water injection, eventually forming a stable seepage field in the coal seam. Additionally, the high-pressure water injection significantly affects the stress field distribution and damage evolution in the coal seam.
