Resolution Potential of Necrotic Cell Death Pathways

Anett Mazlo et al.

Summary: During tissue damage caused by infection or inflammation, both DAMPs and RAMPs can be activated. These factors stimulate immune cells and induce the production of inflammatory mediators or SPMs. While apoptotic cell death is believed to be the main initiator of resolution, necrotic cell death may release more RAMPs. The role of regulated forms of necrotic cell death in resolution is less understood.

The molecular and metabolic landscape of iron and ferroptosis in cardiovascular disease

Xuexian Fang et al.

Summary: Iron homeostasis is crucial for proper cardiac function, and iron imbalance is a common factor in various cardiovascular diseases. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent regulated cell death, has been increasingly recognized as an important process underlying the pathogenesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Understanding the mechanisms of iron metabolism and ferroptosis regulation in cardiomyocytes may lead to improvements in disease management.

Sulfide regulation of cardiovascular function in health and disease

Gopi K. Kolluru et al.

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signalling molecule that plays important roles in cardiovascular health and disease. It interacts with nitric oxide, activates signalling cascades, and regulates post-translational modifications and oxidation-reduction processes. H2S and its enzymes and metabolites have been shown to protect against various cardiovascular pathologies, and their reduced bioavailability is associated with cardiovascular disease.

Targeting a novel apoptotic pathway in human disease

Francesca D'Addio et al.

Summary: Apoptotic pathways play a vital role in maintaining tissue and organ homeostasis. Dysregulation of cell death signaling can lead to various diseases, including cancer and chronic degenerative diseases. Therefore, targeting apoptotic factors has become a focus of research, and the IGFBP3/TMEM219 apoptotic axis has shown promising results in disease conditions such as intestinal disorders and diabetes.

The emerging crosstalk between atherosclerosis-related microRNAs and Bermuda triangle of foam cells: Cholesterol influx, trafficking, and efflux

Harun Achmad et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is characterized by the gradual buildup of lipid particles in damaged arteries, leading to cholesterol accumulation and foam cell formation. Foam cell formation is regulated by various mechanisms, including the role of epigenetic factors such as microRNA alteration. Recent studies have focused on the potential interplay between microRNAs and foam cell formation in atherosclerosis, but further research is needed. This review examines the underlying processes of foam cell formation and microRNA crosstalk to provide insights into therapeutic implications in atherosclerosis.

Mechanistic insight into hydrothermally prepared molybdenum-based electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

S. M. Abu Nayem et al.

Summary: Electrochemical water splitting is a promising technology for sustainable and clean energy production by producing hydrogen. Molybdenum-based electrocatalysts, prepared using the hydrothermal method, exhibit high activity and stability across a wide pH range. This review provides a mechanistic insight into the hydrothermally prepared Mo-based electrocatalysts for overall water splitting, covering the fundamental processes of oxygen and hydrogen evolution. The review also discusses different types of Mo-based electrocatalysts and highlights novel strategies and challenges in developing high-performance electrocatalysts.

Carboxyl PEGylation of magnetic nanoparticles as antithrombotic and thrombolytic agents by calcium binding

Yingxin Bian et al.

Summary: Polyethylene glycol (PEG), known for its biocompatibility and hemocompatibility, is widely used as an anti-fouling coating for biomaterials. Functionalized PEG-coated nanoparticles have been studied for their interactions with cells, but there is limited research on their effects on the coagulation system, particularly platelets. Experiments and molecular dynamic simulations have shown that carboxylation of PEG enhances its binding with calcium, making it a potential anticoagulant. Carboxyl PEGylated magnetic nanoparticles have shown increased anticoagulant and antiplatelet properties, and have the potential to be used for targeted and effective treatments of acute cardiovascular diseases.

Paramjit S. Tappia et al.

Summary: Vitamin D plays a significant role in cardiac function by regulating gene expression, preventing cardiac remodeling, and protecting against inflammation and apoptosis. However, clinical studies on the impact of vitamin D on heart function have yielded inconsistent results, leading to a lack of consensus on its use for heart failure treatment or prevention.

An insight into biofabrication of selenium nanostructures and their biomedical application

Naghmeh Satarzadeh et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that nanoparticles, particularly inorganic nanoparticles, have lower toxicity, improved targeting, and enhanced bioactivity. Selenium nanoparticles, in particular, have attracted interest due to their unique bioactivities and potential therapeutic effects with minimal adverse effects. These nanoparticles can be synthesized through physical, biological, and chemical methods, with biosynthesis being a more environmentally friendly and reproducible approach. The size, shape, and synthesis methods of these nanoparticles have been investigated to understand their application in biological systems. This review focuses on the synthesis and biomedical characteristics of selenium nanoparticles, highlighting their antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties, as well as providing future perspectives.
