Tailoring TiO2-lignin hybrid materials as a bio-filler for the synthesis of composites based on epoxy resin

Patryk Jedrzejczak et al.

Summary: Functional TiO2-lignin hybrid materials were designed and characterized in this study. The efficiency of the mechanical method used to obtain the systems was confirmed through elemental analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. These hybrid materials exhibited good electrokinetic stability, especially in inert and alkaline environments. The addition of TiO2 improved the thermal stability of the materials and increased the homogeneity of the system as well as the occurrence of smaller nanometric particles with an increase in the inorganic component. Furthermore, a novel synthesis method of cross-linked polymer composites was described, and the properties of the composites were studied using accelerated UV-aging tests, wettability measurements, surface free energy analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, microscopic studies, and color parameter measurements in the CIE-Lab system.

Short-time deep eutectic solvents pretreatment enhanced production of fermentable sugars and tailored lignin nanoparticles from abaca

Cheng-Ye Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that short-time DES pretreatment is effective in producing high-yield fermentable sugars and tailored LNPs from abaca. Analysis using NMR and GPC showed that DES lignin fractions have depolymerized structures with relatively low molecular weight, and TEM analysis confirmed that these lignin fractions are LNPs. Furthermore, all DES lignin exhibited excellent antioxidant activities, making them potential natural antioxidants for industrial applications.
