Comparative efficacy of self-administered dentifrices for the management of dentine hypersensitivity-A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Alexander J. Pollard et al.

Summary: This systematic review with network meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of self-administered dentifrices for dentine hypersensitivity (DH) pain management. The results suggest that self-applied dentifrices containing formulations of stannous, potassium +/stannous, or arginine used twice daily can effectively reduce DH pain. However, standardised methodology guidelines are needed for improved DH clinical studies.

The mechanism of dentine hypersensitivity: Stimuli-induced directional cation transport through dentinal tubules

Nuo Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that stimuli-induced directional cation transport, rather than fluid-flow, through dentinal tubules actually leads to dentine hypersensitivity. The research provides evidence that external stimuli (pressure, pH, and temperature) can induce ion currents through negatively charged dentinal tubules, triggering nerve impulses and causing dentine hypersensitivity. Blocking these tubules with cationic hydrogels can significantly reduce nerve action potentials, while anionic hydrogels enhance them, supporting the role of cation-flow in dentine hypersensitivity.

The Effectiveness of Calcium Phosphates in the Treatment of Dentinal Hypersensitivity: A Systematic Review

Melanie Maillard et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the ability of different formulations of calcium phosphate to reduce dentin hypersensitivity pain level in clinical studies. The results show that calcium phosphates have properties that reduce dentin hypersensitivity pain. The biomimetic and non-toxic characteristics of these materials make them a major asset in treating dentin hypersensitivity.

Effectiveness of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride in Reducing Dentine Hypersensitivity on Exposed Root Surface in Older Chinese Adults: Study Protocol for a Randomised Double-Blind Study

Alice Kit Ying Chan et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the anti-hypersensitivity effect of silver diamine fluoride on older Chinese adults with dentine hypersensitivity due to an exposed root surface. A randomised double-blind clinical trial will be conducted with at least 148 Chinese older adults aged 65 or above recruited for the study.

Effectiveness and cytotoxicity of two desensitizing agents: a dentin permeability measurement and dentin barrier testing in vitro study

Ruodan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of two desensitizers on dentin specimen permeability and dentin barrier cytotoxicity. Results showed that both GLU and RD significantly reduced dentin permeability and occluded the dentinal tubules, but RD's remineralization potential was not fully realized after a short period of immersion. Additionally, GLU showed cytotoxicity, while RD was non-cytotoxic.

Quantitative assessment of dentine mineralization and tubule occlusion by NovaMin and stannous fluoride using serial block face scanning electron microscopy

Behrad Mahmoodi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of NovaMin and stannous fluoride (SnF2) on dentine tubule occlusion using serial block-face SEM (SBF-SEM). Results showed that NovaMin achieved better occlusion than SnF2, leading to increased mineral density and dentine mineralization. SBF-SEM demonstrates potential for high-resolution analysis of bone-like materials for research and development of new biomaterials.
