Folic Acid-Grafted Chitosan-Alginate Nanocapsules as Effective Targeted Nanocarriers for Delivery of Turmeric Oil for Breast Cancer Therapy

Htet Htet Moe San et al.

Summary: Folate receptors can be used as a marker for targeted delivery of chemotherapeutics to breast cancer. In this study, folic acid-grafted chitosan-alginate nanocapsules loaded with turmeric oil were developed. The optimized nanocapsules had a homogeneous particle size and satisfactory encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity. In vitro release study showed sustained release of turmeric oil from the nanocapsules, which exhibited improved anticancer activity against breast cancer cells expressing high levels of folate receptors.

Iron oxide nanoparticles as a drug carrier reduce host immunosuppression for enhanced chemotherapy

Benqing Zhou et al.

Summary: Chemotherapy often suppresses the immune system, limiting its effectiveness. By designing a novel nanocarrier to deliver an anticancer drug, the immune system can be restored and the effectiveness of chemotherapy can be improved. Additionally, this nanocarrier can also serve as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging of tumors and lymph nodes.

5-Fluorouracil-containing inorganic iron oxide/platinum nanozymes with dual drug delivery and enzyme-like activity for the treatment of breast cancer

Zheng Nie et al.

Summary: This study developed a nano drug delivery platform with platinum nanozymes dispersed on the surface of iron oxide nanospheres, which not only improved the peroxidase mimic activity and catalase mimic activity, but also exhibited pH sensitivity for breast cancer therapy. The results demonstrated that the nanospheres achieved optimal drug loading and release, mitigated tumor cell proliferation through increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and showed promise in reducing tumor size and overcoming tumor hypoxia in vivo.

Summary: Selective delivery of drugs to damaged tissues can reduce side effects and enhance therapeutic efficacy. Multi-targeted nanoparticles were successfully designed and synthesized for co-delivery of drug and nucleic acid to cancer cells. Encapsulation of drugs in biocompatible copolymers showed great anticancer activities, and applying an external magnetic field increased drug delivery efficiency significantly.

Effect of Ca2+ cross-linking on the properties and structure of lutein-loaded sodium alginate hydrogels

Pengxiang Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the construction of nano-lutein hydrogels with sustained release properties by cross-linking with different concentrations of Ca2+. Results showed that the highest loading capacity for lutein reached 770.88 μg/g, with an encapsulation efficiency of 99.39%. The presence of lutein nanoparticles and increased Ca2+ concentration both affected the physical properties and swelling behavior of the hydrogel. The stability of cross-linked ionic bonds in the hydrogel was reduced by lutein nanoparticles and excessive Ca2+, impacting its thermodynamic stability.
