Evaluation of Newcastle disease virus LaSota strain attenuated by codon pair deoptimization of the HN and F genes for in ovo vaccination

Fatma Eldemery et al.

Summary: In this study, the codon pair deoptimization (CPD) approach was used to attenuate the NDV LS vaccine strain for in ovo vaccination. However, the current level of suboptimal codon substitutions was not sufficient to sufficiently attenuate the virus. Optimization of more codons or additional genes may be required for sufficient attenuation.

Epidemiology of Newcastle disease in poultry in Africa: systematic review and meta-analysis

Elifuraha Barnabas Mngumi et al.

Summary: The present study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of Newcastle disease in unvaccinated backyard poultry in Africa. The results showed significant variation in both the seroprevalence and prevalence of Newcastle disease virus reported in different studies. Different sampling frames, diagnostic tests, and regions also influenced the prevalence. Multiple genotypes of NDV were found to be circulating and maintained within the poultry population. It is recommended that African countries strengthen their surveillance systems and establish control programs for the disease.

Current situation and future direction of Newcastle disease vaccines

Zenglei Hu et al.

Summary: Newcastle disease is a highly economically damaging infectious disease affecting poultry, causing severe tissue damage in multiple systems. Progress has been made in preventing morbidity and mortality caused by the virus. However, the virus is still endemic in some regions, impacting the livelihoods of people dependent on poultry for food.

Identification of a potential neutralizing linear epitope of hemagglutinin-neuraminidase in Newcastle disease virus

Zhongyuan Jin et al.

Summary: The hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) protein of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is a major protective antigen that can induce neutralizing antibodies. By using pepscan technology with LaSota-specific chicken hyperimmune antisera, five immunodominant epitopes (IDEs) of the HN protein were identified, with IDE4 (242-256 aa) being determined as a potential neutralizing linear epitope.

Molecular Characterization of Velogenic Newcastle Disease Virus (Sub-Genotype VII.1.1) from Wild Birds, with Assessment of Its Pathogenicity in Susceptible Chickens

Khaled Saad Abd Elfatah et al.

Summary: Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting various avian species, particularly chickens, with the sub-genotype VII.1.1 found in wild birds. Molecular and histopathological methods play crucial roles in detecting and characterizing the virus. Further research is needed to explore the epidemiology and strains of NDV in different bird species.

Plant-based, adjuvant-free, potent multivalent vaccines for avian influenza virus via Lactococcus surface display

Shi-Jian Song et al.

Summary: The study developed a new subunit vaccine platform by expressing HA ectodomains of influenza viruses in plants, achieving potent, adjuvant-free, and multivalent vaccination. The platform successfully demonstrated strong immune responses in mice and chickens and proposed combining plant-based antigen production with BLP-based delivery as a cost-effective approach for multivalent subunit vaccines.
