Nanocellulose-based electrodes and separator toward sustainable and flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor

Zejun Ding et al.

Summary: A reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/cellulose nanocrystal/cellulose nanofiber (RCC) composite membrane was prepared using a one-pot method, which exhibited improved mechanical properties and hydrophilicity compared to pure RGO membranes. The RCC composite membrane showed a specific capacitance as high as 171.3 F cm(-3) due to the synergistic effect of nanocellulose and RGO sheets. A nanocellulose-based symmetric flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor (FASC) constructed using this composite membrane demonstrated a high volumetric specific capacitance of 164.3 F cm(-3) and a satisfactory energy density of 3.7 mW h cm(-3), surpassing many other reported flexible supercapacitors. This work could pave the way for the design of next-generation nanocellulose-based sustainable and flexible energy storage devices.

Molecular-Level Methylcellulose/MXene Hybrids with Greatly Enhanced Electrochemical Actuation

Shaohua Chen et al.

Summary: Ti3C2Tx MXene film is a promising material for electrochemical actuators, but its performance is limited by slow ion diffusion and poor mechanical property in aqueous electrolytes. In this study, a hybrid film of molecular-level methylcellulose (MC)/MXene is used to assemble a film with enlarged layer distance and improved wet strength, resulting in significantly higher actuation strain in a liquid electrolyte. The enhanced actuation is attributed to the enlarged layer distance allowing more water and ions to be intercalated/de-intercalated and the sliding of MXene sheets induced by MC.

Rational design of Ti3C2/carbon nanotubes/MnCo2S4 electrodes for symmetric supercapacitors with high energy storage

Alei Dang et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the improvement of electrochemical performance of supercapacitors with high-energy storage by selective electrode materials and rational structural design. The Ti3C2/CNTs/MnCo2S4 composite electrodes were fabricated, which exhibited enhanced specific capacitance, high rate retention, and excellent cycling stability. These improved electrochemical performances were attributed to the synergistic effect of pseudocapative material of MnCo2S4, remarkable conductivity of Ti3C2 and CNTs, and the micro-/nano-porous structures constructed by stacking Ti3C2 flakes with CNTs. The Ti3C2/CNTs/MnCo2S4 electrode-based symmetric supercapacitor also demonstrated a high energy density, indicating the substantial enhancement of Ti3C2-based supercapacitors by rational design and modification.
