Effects of bypass-current and out plasma current on droplet transfer behaviours during plasma-MIG hybrid arc welding

Yugang Miao et al.

Summary: A new method of bypass-current plasma-MIG hybrid arc welding for AA 5083 aluminium alloy was proposed, and a comparative investigation between simulation and experiment was conducted to quantify the effects of bypass-current and out plasma current on droplet transfer behaviours. The results indicate that the variation of bypass-current and out plasma current can lead to changes in droplet transfer mode and frequency, which is significant for controlling and optimizing the welding process of aluminium alloy.

Effect of droplet transition on the dynamic behavior of the keyhole during 6061 aluminum alloy laser-MIG hybrid welding

Yue Li et al.

Summary: The simulation method in laser-MIG hybrid welding reveals the complex physical phenomena and dynamic behavior of the molten pool keyhole. The experimental results show that the droplet transition behavior affects the formation of the keyhole, with the smallest keyhole formed when the droplet comes into contact with the molten pool. Additionally, droplet transition brings external momentum and energy to the molten pool, contributing to an increase in the flow rate of the molten pool.

Numerical investigation of asymmetric weld fusion geometry in laser welding of aluminium alloy with beam oscillation

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the asymmetric weld fusion geometry in oscillating laser beam welding of aluminium alloy using a numerical approach. A multi-physics heat transfer and fluid flow model was developed and validated, and it was found that the asymmetry in local heat input and fluid flow pattern are the main factors causing the asymmetric weld fusion geometry in OLBW.

A 3D arc-droplet-molten pool integrated model of Al alloy GMAW process: Heat transfer, fluid flow and the effect of external magnetic field

Wenyong Zhao et al.

Summary: The effect of external magnetic field (EMF) on the behavior of heat transfer and fluid flow in aluminum alloy fabrication process has been investigated. The study found that a moderate magnetic flux density of EMF can compress the arc plasma, decrease the average temperature of droplet metal, enhance the peak velocity of plasma, and expand the high-velocity plasma zone. The EMF also reduces the dimensions of the molten pool in the early stages of welding and significantly changes the flow pattern of liquid metal in the pool.

Fatigue strength evaluation of 5059 aluminum alloy welded joints Considering welding deformation and residual stress

Shuangxi Xu et al.

Summary: With the transformation and upgrading of the shipbuilding industry, aluminum alloy shipbuilding is developing towards energy saving, lightweight, and environmental protection. However, the welding of aluminum alloy structures has two prominent shortcomings: large deformation and low fatigue strength. This study aims to accurately consider the influence of welding defects by designing a temperature field simulation program for thin plate welding structures to predict welding deformation and residual stress. The simulation results show good agreement with the test results for the temperature field and welding deformation of typical welded joints. Furthermore, the fatigue strength classification curves of 5059 aluminum alloy welded joints are updated based on the hot spot stress using welding deformation and residual stress as initial conditions.

Numerical investigation on the influence of current waveform on droplet transfer in pulsed gas metal arc welding

Jie Xu et al.

Summary: A numerical model was established to investigate the influence of the welding current on the fluid flow of arc plasma and filler metal in pulsed gas metal arc welding (P-GMAW). Experimental results showed that the waveform with a median current of 140 A had the best tolerance of the welding speed. Numerical simulation results revealed that this waveform could lead to lower droplet temperature and velocity.

Summary: The cycloid scan path in laser welding of 5A06 aluminum alloys produces the largest molten pools with regular morphology and lowest temperature gradients, leading to reduction in porosity formation. Additionally, the shallow keyhole, low and highly homogeneous melt flow velocity, and complicated vortices contribute to this reduction.
