Competitive reaction effect of vinyl acetate on preparation and characterization of thermosetting starch-based wood adhesives grafted by N-methylol acrylamide

Li Cheng et al.

Summary: N-methylol acrylamide (NMA) was added to a formaldehyde-free starch-based adhesive with the addition of vinyl acetate (VAc) to improve its thermosetting properties and wet strength. VAc reduced graft density and improved the uniformity of NMA, resulting in a starch-based adhesive with better stability and fluidity. The reaction between VAc and NMA inhibited overreaction and improved the water resistance of the adhesive.

Preparation and characterization of formaldehyde-free wood adhesive from mangrove bark tannin

Norizaty Irman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the possibility of using tannin as a formaldehyde-free wood adhesive. Tannins extracted from Mangrove bark were modified into tanninacetone-phenol-glyoxal (TAPG) and tannin-methanol-phenol-glyoxal (TMPG) adhesives. The properties of the extracted tannins were characterized using various techniques, and the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of TAPG and TMPG adhesives were determined. Results show that both TAPG and TMPG adhesives have superior tensile strength compared to the control adhesive containing formaldehyde.

Ozone Processing of Cassava Starch

Damaris Carvalho Lima et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ozonation of cassava starch, showing that ozonation increased the number of carbonyl and carboxyl groups while reducing large and branched molecules. These structural changes significantly influenced the pasting properties and gel texture, with ozonated starch hydrogels being 280% stronger than native starch. Additionally, the ozonated starch pastes remained consistent even at acidic conditions and were clearer than native ones.

Preparation and characterization of a melamine-urea-glyoxal resin and its modified soybean adhesive

Yufei Kan et al.

Summary: A formaldehyde-free crosslinking agent, MUG resin, was developed for soybean meal adhesive to improve bond properties, with the need to control the melamine content for stability. Melamine plays a crucial role in the adhesive properties, but excessive addition can lead to a reduction in storage time and bonding quality.

Incorporation of chitosan into a universal adhesive system: Physicochemical characteristics, gelatinolytic activity, bond strength and interface micromorphology analyses

Rodrigo Dacoreggio et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the physicochemical characteristics of a universal adhesive system containing 0.5% chitosan and its effects on bond strength stability to dentin, dentin-restoration interface, and gelatinolytic activity. The addition of chitosan increased particle size, polydispersity index, and affected zeta potential over time. Both SE and TE strategies with chitosan showed higher collagenolytic activity compared to those without chitosan, while TE strategy had higher microtensile bond strength at 6 months.
