The surface-reconstruction virtual-region mesh update method for problems with topology changes

Felipe A. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel boundary-conforming mesh-update method is proposed for problems with large boundary displacements and topology changes. This method combines the virtual region approach and surface reconstruction process to handle complex boundary movements. The robustness of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerical examples of Poiseuille flow variation and flow simulation during a closing diaphragm valve, including large boundary movement, complex geometry, and closing motion.

Time-continuous and time-discontinuous space-time finite elements for advection-diffusion problems

Max Von Danwitz et al.

Summary: We proposed four variants of space-time finite element discretizations using linear tensor-product and simplex-type finite elements. The resulting discretizations are continuous in space and either continuous or discontinuous in time. We applied these methods to a linear scalar advection-diffusion model and studied their convergence properties in numerical experiments. We also demonstrated the potential of time-continuous simplex space-time finite elements for heat flux computations using piston ring pack and subtractive manufacturing test cases.

Combining boundary-conforming finite element meshes on moving domains using a sliding mesh approach

Jan Helmig et al.

Summary: Boundary-conforming meshes offer advantages in accuracy and efficiency for finite element simulations, but become more challenging to generate with increased domain complexity. Piecing together individual boundary-conforming meshes in a modular fashion allows for coupling of solution fields at overlapping boundary interfaces, utilizing highly tuned meshes for each subdomain. The method ensures mass and energy conservation at common interfaces, with optimal convergence behavior demonstrated for Newtonian and generalized Newtonian material models in complex industrial applications such as plastic extruders.

Four-dimensional elastically deformed simplex space-time meshes for domains with time-variant topology

Max von Danwitz et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method for discretizing the space-time domain using four-dimensional simplex elements to address challenges in computer simulations caused by topology changes. The elegant inclusion of topology changes in pentatope meshes for complex geometries eliminates the need for additional treatments during simulations.
