A novel mechanism for the protection against acute lung injury by melatonin: mitochondrial quality control of lung epithelial cells is preserved through SIRT3-dependent deacetylation of SOD2

Ning Li et al.

Summary: The mitochondrial quality control of lung epithelial cells is disrupted during sepsis, leading to abnormal mitochondrial function and acute lung injury. Melatonin has shown beneficial effects in sepsis and cardiopulmonary disease due to its antioxidative actions. This study explores the potential roles and molecular basis of melatonin in LPS-treated lung epithelial cells, and finds that melatonin can protect against sepsis-induced acute lung injury by preserving mitochondrial quality control in a SIRT3-dependent manner.

Natural product derived phytochemicals in managing acute lung injury by multiple mechanisms

Yu-Qiong He et al.

Summary: ALI and ARDS are common life-threatening lung diseases with high mortality rates, but there is still a lack of effective pharmacological therapies. Developing new drugs for therapy of ALI/ARDS is in great demand, as natural compounds have shown potential therapeutic effects and may also be helpful for treatment of COVID-19.

Sophoricoside attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury by activating the AMPK/Nrf2 signaling axis

Ya-Xian Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that Sophoricoside (SOP) can attenuate LPS-induced acute lung injury (ALI) through modulation of the AMPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway. This suggests that SOP may be a potential therapeutic candidate for treating ALI/ARDS.

Summary: Chemokines, a group of low molecular weight cytokines, play important roles in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and related complications such as lupus nephritis. Some members of the chemokine family have been more clearly defined in their roles in SLE patients or animal models of the disorder.

Angiotensin II-mediated improvement of renal mitochondrial function via the AMPK/PGC-1α/NRF-2 pathway is superior to norepinephrine in a rat model of septic shock associated with acute renal injury

Hui An et al.

Summary: In this study, we compared the therapeutic effects of Angiotensin II (ANG II) and Norepinephrine (NE) on septic acute kidney injury (AKI) in rats induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The results showed that compared to NE, ANG II was more effective in alleviating CLP-induced septic AKI by restoring renal function and reducing mitochondrial damage.
