Research trends in ferroptosis since the origin of the concept: A bibliometric analysis

Huimin Deng et al.

Summary: This bibliometric analysis provides insights into the scientific output, leading institutions, research teams, and current hotspots and trends in ferroptosis research. The study reveals a rapid growth in annual production in the field, with significant contributions from institutions and scholars in China. However, the impact of their research is lower compared to the United States. The study also highlights the influential role of Prof. Brent R. Stockwell's team from Columbia University. The shift in research keywords from oxidative stress and cell death to prognosis, immunotherapy, and tumor microenvironment suggests a transition from basic research to clinical translational research in the field of ferroptosis.

Dexamethasone induces ferroptosis via P53/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway in glucocorticoid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Fei Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers used bioinformatic analysis and in vitro experiments to investigate the effect of ferroptosis on osteocytes in steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head. They found that glucocorticoids can induce ferroptosis in MC3T3-E1 cells by down-regulating the expression of SLC7A11. Furthermore, overexpression of SLC7A11 and the use of a ferroptosis inhibitor can reverse the ferroptosis induced by glucocorticoids. These findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of glucocorticoid-induced osteonecrosis and suggest a potential treatment option for this condition.

Glutathione peroxidase 4-regulated neutrophil ferroptosis induces systemic autoimmunity

Pengchong Li et al.

Summary: This study identifies a role for GPX4-regulated ferroptosis in neutrophils from SLE patients, triggered by interferons and autoreactive antibodies, contributing to lupus pathogenesis. The mechanism involves enhanced binding of a transcriptional repressor to the Gpx4 promoter leading to elevated lipid-reactive oxygen species. Neutrophil ferroptosis is shown to be a significant driver of neutropenia in SLE and heavily contributes to disease manifestations.
