Tectonic evolution of the eastern margin of the Southern Patagonian Andes fold-thrust belt: U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology and kinematic-structural modelling

Juan F. Albano et al.

Summary: We conducted a multidisciplinary study to unravel the evolution of the fold-thrust belt and foreland basin sedimentation in the Austral-Magallanes basin. Using U-Pb geochronology and provenance analysis, we calculated maximum depositional ages and analyzed regional variations in provenance. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the geodynamic framework and timing variations in the South Patagonian Andes.

Composite autonomic severity scoring in spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 and 2

Dibashree Tamuli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the integrity of the autonomic nervous system in patients with spino-cerebellar ataxia (SCA) type 1 and 2 by conducting autonomic function tests and scoring with composite autonomic severity score (CASS). The results showed a reduction in cardiovascular autonomic reactivity parameters, particularly a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and lower 30:15 ratio during head up tilt in both SCA1 and SCA2 patients compared to controls. Sudomotor assessment also revealed prolonged distal leg latency of sweat response in SCA1 patients. The use of CASS indicated the presence of moderate autonomic failure in the majority of SCA1 and SCA2 patients.

Fore-to-retroarc crustal structure of the north Patagonian margin: How is shortening distributed in Andean-type orogens?

Andres Echaurren et al.

Summary: During the long-term evolution of orogenic belts like the Andes, it is not well understood to what extent their different components, the fore-to-retroarc domains, are deformed together or separately. In this study, new field and seismic data of the Chilean forearc at Chiloe Island latitude were integrated with retroarc structure to visualize the crustal architecture in the north Patagonian margin. The results show a coupling of fore-to-retroarc behavior during certain periods, which ceased during the Pliocene due to glaciations. The study also reveals different mechanisms controlling the forearc basins during late Cenozoic changing tectonic conditions.

Summary: This study investigates the Southern Central Andes using a new thermomechanical model and variations in tectonic shortening-thickening. The results show that low-strength zones in the upper-mid crust play a crucial role in triggering crustal shortening, uplift, and exhumation, as well as shallow crustal seismicity.

Role of convergence obliquity and inheritance on sliver tectonics: Insights from 3-D subduction experiments

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of subduction systems and overriding plate strain distribution through laboratory experiments. The results show that the interaction between the slab and the 660 km discontinuity plays a significant role in subduction dynamics, and the convergence angle and the presence of weak zones influence the strain distribution within the overriding plate.

Control of crustal strength, tectonic inheritance, and stretching/shortening rates on crustal deformation and basin reactivation: insights from laboratory models

Benjamin Guillaume et al.

Summary: Geological settings with multiple coeval tectonic regimes provide a unique opportunity to study complex interactions among different geodynamic processes. In this study, analog experiments were conducted to simulate simultaneous shortening and orthogonal extension under different rheological conditions. The results showed that deformation is accommodated by a combination of normal, thrust, and strike-slip faults, with their location depending on boundary conditions and crustal inheritance. The orientation of normal and thrust faults remains consistent, while strike-slip faults exhibit variations relative to the shortening direction. The study also highlighted the reactivation of former extensional structures as either normal or strike-slip faults, depending on the stretching/shortening ratio.

The Influence of Climate on the Dynamics of Mountain Building Within the Northern Patagonian Andes

Ezequiel Garcia Morabito et al.

Summary: Theoretical studies suggest that the dynamics of actively deforming mountain ranges are affected by variations in climate. A study in North Patagonia analyzes the spatial patterns of deformation and their temporal variations to evaluate potential feedbacks between climate and deformation. The data indicate a decrease in shortening rates and subsidence after a period of widespread deformation and uplift, with subsequent structural reorganization marked by enhanced erosion and slip on interior faults.

Mid-Cenozoic SHRIMP U-Pb detrital zircon ages from metasedimentary rocks in the North Patagonian Andes of Aysen, Chile

Paulo Quezada et al.

Summary: Undated low-grade metamorphic rocks in the Puerto Cisnes-Queulat area of Chile have been found to contain detrital zircons of mid-Oligocene age, with similar age and provenance as a paraconglomerate bed of the La Junta Formation to the north. Miocene plutonic rocks intruded these metasedimentary rocks, generating a contact metamorphic aureole and suggesting a regional pattern of earliest Neogene metamorphism and rapid exhumation in this segment of the Patagonian Andes.
