Perfection is the enemy of evolution

Adrian Bejan

Summary: The phenomenon of evolution involves perceptible changes in flow configuration over time. This clashes with the rigid doctrine of precise optima, minima, and maxima derived from calculus and computational simulations. By examining human settlements and animal locomotion, it is evident that even a small imperfection in performance allows for a wide range of design choices that achieve near perfect performance. Evolutionary designs shed light on the diminishing returns near the mathematical optimum. What works is preserved in the process of evolution.

A constructal approach applied to the cooling of semi-elliptical blocks assembled into a rectangular channel under forced convection

A. L. Razera et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the design of heated semi-elliptical blocks in forced convective channel flows. The Constructal Design method is used to determine restrictions, degrees of freedom, performance indicators, and the search space of solutions. The results demonstrate significant improvements in thermal and fluid dynamic performances between the best and worst shapes at different Reynolds numbers.

Geometric optimization of a rectangular isothermal block inside a lid-driven cavity by means of constructal design

Rafael da Silveira Borahel et al.

Summary: This study applies the Constructal Design method to analyze the heat transfer performance of a rectangular isothermal block placed inside an adiabatic lid-driven cavity with mixed convection and unstable stratification. The results show that higher heat transfer rates are achieved with larger aspect ratios and taller block shapes.
