Genetic structure in neotropical birds with different tolerance to urbanization

Mauricio Rodriguez-Bardia et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of urbanization on gene flow in two bird species with different resilience. The results show that urban avoider species, such as the white-eared ground-sparrow, are more affected by urbanization compared to urban dweller species like the house wren. This difference can be attributed to habitat plasticity and dispersal limitation.

Effects of Habitat Fragmentation on the Population Structure and Genetic Diversity of Erythroneurini in the Typical Karst Rocky Ecosystem, Southwest China

Xiaoxiao Chen et al.

Summary: Based on satellite imagery, field survey collection, and molecular sequencing data, this article explores the habitat fragmentation, species diversity, and genetic diversity of Erythroneurine leafhoppers in three typical karst areas in southwest China. The results show a positive correlation between the fragmentation degree of Erythroneurine leafhopper habitat and the degree of rocky desertification in the area. The study also reveals that habitat fragmentation affects the species diversity and genetic diversity of the leafhoppers, with higher diversity in regions with weaker fragmentation.

Venom resistance mechanisms in centipede show tissue specificity

Yunfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanism of tissue-specific resistance in centipedes, where a splice variant of the receptor repels its own toxin, establishing a safe zone in the venom-storing/secreting environment.

Bioactive Peptides and Proteins from Centipede Venoms

Yalan Han et al.

Summary: Venoms are complex mixtures of biologically active molecules, including peptides, proteins, polyamide, and enzymes, widely produced by venomous organisms. Through long-term evolution, venomous animals have developed highly specific and diverse peptides and proteins that target key physiological elements. Centipedes, as typical venomous arthropods, rely on their toxins for predation and defense. Despite frequent reports of centipede bites, the composition and effects of centipede venoms remain largely unknown. However, with advancements in molecular biology and structural biology, research on the bioactive peptides and proteins in centipede venoms has deepened.

Genetic diversity in peridomiciliary populations of Triatoma mexicana (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in central Mexico

Nancy Rivas et al.

Summary: The genetic structure of Triatoma mexicana populations from central Mexico was studied using the Cyt-b gene as a genetic marker. The results showed that the Hidalgo population had the highest genetic and haplotypic variation, while the Guanajuato population exhibited genetic isolation. Phylogenetic and haplotype network analyses suggested the presence of multiple species within the sampled area.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Spirobolus bungii as Revealed by Mitochondrial DNA Sequences

Runfeng Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the population genetics of 166 Spirobolus bungii individuals from Nanjing and Tianjin, revealing genetic diversity, genetic structure, and the impact of geographical barriers on gene flow. The results provide a theoretical basis for future research on millipede taxonomy and population genetic evolution.

Urbanization reduces gene flow but not genetic diversity of stream salamander populations in the New York City metropolitan area

Summary: Urbanization can reduce genetic connectivity among stream salamander populations, potentially leading to population isolation and extinction, particularly in areas with higher levels of urbanization.

Spatiotemporal Genetic Diversity of Lions Reveals the Influence of Habitat Fragmentation across Africa

Caitlin J. Curry et al.

Summary: Direct comparisons between historical and contemporary populations revealed changes in genetic diversity over the last century, with habitat fragmentation leading to increased geographic isolation of lion subpopulations and loss of genetic diversity in nuclear markers. However, mitochondrial structure and diversity remained consistent over time.

Bioindicator snake shows genomic signatures of natural and anthropogenic barriers to gene flow

Damian C. Lettoof et al.

Summary: Urbanisation impacts genetic diversity and fitness of tiger snake populations, with increased inbreeding and genetic drift observed in more isolated areas. Effective population sizes are small and reflect available habitat rather than urbanisation levels. Ecosystem management and restoration are crucial to prevent further loss of genetic diversity in urban wetlands.

Arthropod Predation of Vertebrates Structures Trophic Dynamics in Island Ecosystems

Luke R. Halpin et al.

Summary: The study found that centipedes play a significant role in predating on black-winged petrel nestlings on Norfolk Islands, causing a high mortality rate and leading to breeding failure for the petrels. This demonstrates the impact arthropods can have on vertebrate reproductive output and trophic structures in island ecosystems.
