Mingjie Cai et al.

Summary: The artificial S-scheme photocatalysis system, mimicking natural photosynthesis, has shown excellent potential for the photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). In this study, Cd0.5Zn0.5S/Bi2MoO6 S-scheme heterostructures were fabricated and showed significantly improved degradation efficiency of enrofloxacin compared to Cd0.5Zn0.5S and Bi2MoO6 alone. The integration of Cd0.5Zn0.5S with Bi2MoO6 resulted in effective spatial photo-carrier dissolution and optimized photo-redox capacity, leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance and stability. The study also revealed the toxicological analysis of intermediates and showcased the potential of the system for PPPCs degradation in authentic water systems.

Bi2S3 incorporated mesoporous ZrO2 networks as an effective photocatalyst for photocatalytic oxidation of thiophene

Bakhitah M. Alajmi et al.

Summary: Mesoporous Bi2S3/ZrO2 nanocomposites were synthesized using Pluronic (F-68) as a surfactant by sol-gel process and applied for thiophene oxidation under visible illumination. Bi2S3 NPs were distributed on mesoporous ZrO2 and exhibited a greater separation rate of charge carriers and extended light response compared to pure ZrO2. The optimized 15% Bi2S3/ZrO2 showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency (100%) within 105 min of visible light illumination. The photocatalytic efficiency of Bi2S3/ZrO2 nanocomposites was significantly higher than that of pure ZrO2 NPs, and the rate constant of the 15% Bi2S3/ZrO2 photocatalyst was improved 5.25 times larger than that of pure ZrO2 NPs. The improved photocatalytic ability of Bi2S3/ZrO2 nanocomposites was attributed to the formation of heterojunction Bi2S3/ZrO2, incorporation of Bi2S3 into ZrO2 and utilization of visible light in wide wavelengths.

A novel organic/inorganic S-scheme heterostructure of TCPP/Bi12O17Cl2 for boosting photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride: Kinetic, degradation mechanism, and toxic assessment

Chunchun Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a visible-light-driven organic-inorganic S-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst with excellent performance in removing antibiotics from wastewater. By anchoring TCPP on the surface of Bi12O17Cl2, the S-scheme junction between TCPP and Bi12O17Cl2 was created, enhancing the visible-light response and accelerating the disintegration and conservation of photo-carriers. The resulting TCPP/Bi12O17Cl2 showed significantly improved photocatalytic activity and stability compared to Bi12O17Cl2. Through scavenging tests, LC-MS analysis, and toxicity calculation, the reactive radicals, degradation pathway, and eco-toxicity were elucidated. This research demonstrates the potential practicality of porphyrin-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient antibiotic removal.

S-scheme MIL-101(Fe) octahedrons modified Bi2WO6 microspheres for photocatalytic decontamination of Cr(VI) and tetracycline hydrochloride: Synergistic insights, reaction pathways, and toxicity analysis

Shijie Li et al.

Summary: Solar-driven elimination of refractory contaminants is an ideal approach for environmental remediation. However, the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts is limited by insufficient reactive sites and fast recombination of electrons and holes. In this study, a novel metal-organic framework-based heterostructure of MIL-101(Fe)/Bi2WO6 was synthesized, which exhibited significantly enhanced photoactivity for Cr(VI) reduction and tetracycline hydrochloride oxidation compared to individual Bi2WO6 and MIL-101(Fe). The improved catalytic performance can be attributed to the enlarged surface area and pollutant adsorption facilitated by MIL-101(Fe), as well as the efficient photo-carrier transport mechanism supported by oxygen vacancies.
