Effect of bimetallic modification on blast furnace slag and its application in low-temperature selective catalytic reduction

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aims to control NOx in low-temperature flue gases emitted from non-power industries by using inexpensive blast furnace slag as raw material to prepare denitration catalysts. The blast furnace slag is processed into a powder called GGBS (ground granulated blast furnace slag) that meets the activity index requirements. Mn-based GGBS catalysts loaded with different active components (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Ce) are investigated.

A high-strength red mud-fly ash geopolymer and the implications of curing temperature

Bing Bai et al.

Summary: In response to the requirement for comprehensive utilization of industrial waste, high-strength geopolymers were prepared from red mud and fly ash. Increasing curing temperature and maintaining humidity during curing were found to enhance the strength of the geopolymer. The use of sodium hydroxide solution improved strength, but excessive concentration caused efflorescence. Strength of the geopolymer increased with the concentration of the mixed solution composed of sodium hydroxide solution and water glass.

Application of B3O3 monolayer as an electrical sensor for detection of formaldehyde gas: A DFT study

Mustafa M. Kadhim et al.

Summary: The level of economic development in countries has significantly improved in the post-epidemic years due to the rapid recovery of trade and industry. However, the main issue of harmful gas emissions has come into focus again. To overcome this challenge, it is important to employ proper approaches for convenient, accurate, and real-time monitoring of harmful gases. In this study, a B3O3 monolayer gas sensor was proposed for monitoring harmful formaldehyde (HCHO) gas based on first-principles DFT computations. The findings show significant changes in electronic attributes and adsorption for HCHO gas on the B3O3 surface, making B3O3 a promising candidate for HCHO molecule detection.

Adsorption mechanism of shell powders on heavy metal ions Pb2+/Cd2+ and the purification efficiency for contaminated soils

Bing Bai et al.

Summary: This study discusses the adsorption capacity of oyster shell powders (SPs) and the adsorption mechanism of heavy metal ions (HMs; i.e., cadmium ions Cd2+ and lead ions Pb2+) on SPs through adsorption kinetics tests, adsorption-desorption tests, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of seepage velocity, heavy metal types, and SP addition amount/concentration on the adsorption performance of SPs in treating HMs in laterite and quartz sand were analyzed. The research findings indicate that SPs have high purification efficiency for HMs in contaminated soils.

How Effective are Metal Nanotherapeutic Platforms Against Bacterial Infections? A Comprehensive Review of Literature

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria is a global crisis. Conventional antibiotics have limitations, so novel anti-infection strategies are urgently needed. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have adjustable apertures, high drug-loading rates, and superior biocompatibilities, making them ideal drug delivery carriers. This article reviews the design, antibacterial mechanisms, and applications of MOFs and MOF-based drug-loading materials.

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped microporous carbon prepared by a couple of activating and functionalized reagents for efficient CO2 capture and selective CO2/CH4 separation

Yao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple, green and cost-effective method was developed to synthesize N, S co-doped microporous carbon adsorbent using anthracite as the carbon source and Na2S2O3 and NaNH2 as activating and functionalized reagents. The resulting carbon adsorbent exhibited well-developed microporosity and desirable functional heteroatoms doping. The synergistic effect of these properties provided the carbon with a high CO2 adsorption capacity (3.73 mmol g-1) and good selectivity (7.80, 7.03, 5.58, 4.93 and 4.40) for binary CO2/CH4 mixture separation. The effective dynamic breakthrough behavior further demonstrated its adaptability in commercial applications.

Improving sensing of formaldehyde using ZnO nanostructures with surface-adsorbed oxygen

Sherif Abdulkader Tawfik et al.

Summary: The study investigates the crucial roles of surface oxygen in the sensitivity of ZnO nanostructures towards formaldehyde through density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Surface oxygen facilitates both the presence of charge trap states and the dissociative chemisorption of formaldehyde on the surface, leading to multiple reaction products and enhanced recyclability. The research not only confirms experimental reactions, but also provides insights into the gas-surface reaction mechanism of ZnO nanostructure-based gas sensors.

First-Principles Study on the Adsorption Characteristics of Corrosive Species on Passive Film TiO2 in a NaCl Solution Containing H2S and CO2

Pan Dong et al.

Summary: The adsorption characteristics of corrosive anions on the TiO2 surface of TC4 titanium alloy were studied using density functional theory. The results showed that the optimal adsorption positions were bridge positions, and the interface bonding was mainly caused by charge movement. The adsorption configurations were all chemical adsorption. A novel corrosion mechanism for the dynamic evolution processes of pits was proposed based on the findings.
