The Pattern of Hydroxyphenyl-Substitution Influences CO2 Reduction More Strongly than the Number of Hydroxyphenyl Groups in Iron-Porphyrin Electrocatalysts

Ana Sonea et al.

Summary: The development of catalysts for converting CO2 to useful products is a challenging task. This study investigates the influence of the position and number of hydroxyphenyl groups in iron porphyrins on CO2-to-CO conversion. The results show that iron porphyrins with 5,15-bis(2,6-dihydroxyphenyl) substitution are superior electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction in N,N-dimethylformamide solvent. Calculations and analyses of vibrational frequencies, optical spectra, and reduction potentials provide insights into the factors that affect catalyst performance.

Molecular Catalysts for the Reductive Homocoupling of CO2 towards C2+ Compounds

Hong-Qing Liang et al.

Summary: The conversion of CO2 into multicarbon compounds offers the possibility to create carbon-neutral fuels or other valuable products. So far, most studies have focused on heterogeneous metallic catalysts, but the potential of molecular catalysts is still underexplored. This Minireview summarizes recent progress in the thermo- and electrochemical reductive homocoupling of CO2 mediated by molecular catalysts and discusses the use of CO homocoupling as a model for further conversion of intermediates obtained from CO2 reduction.

Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction: from Discrete Molecular Catalysts to Their Integrated Catalytic Materials

Kai Lei et al.

Summary: This minireview explores the application of molecular catalysts (metal complexes) in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. Molecular catalysts have molecularly defined active sites and precise structural tailorability, but suffer from poor stability and low catalytic current density. Heterogenizing discrete molecular catalysts can overcome these issues and combine the advantages of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis.

Non-negligible Axial Ligand Effect on Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction with Iron Porphyrin Complexes

Jiancong Zheng et al.

Summary: Iron(III) porphyrin complexes have been studied as efficient catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction. This study focuses on the role of axial ligands coordinated with the metal center in the complex on the catalytic activity. The results show that the catalytic activity of FeTPP-SCN is significantly suppressed in DMF solutions. Structural dynamics analysis reveals that the reorientational dynamics of the SCN ligands are restricted in DMF, indicating the importance of subtle electrostatic interactions between ligands and the metal center on catalysis.

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen-Bond Effects of Second-Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins

Mina R. Narouz et al.

Summary: By decorating iron porphyrins with imidazolium pendants, a family of multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups is developed to enhance catalytic performance in synthetic systems. In the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), these imidazolium units promote multiple synergistic effects to increase CO2RR activity. The study also reveals that through-space charge effects have a stronger impact on catalytic CO2RR performance than hydrogen bonding in this context.
