Redox-active ligands for chemical, electrochemical, and photochemical molecular conversions

Akinobu Nakada et al.

Summary: The hybridization of functional ligands with metal atoms is a central issue in the design of reactions and catalysts based on metal complexes. Recent studies have shown that redox-active/non-innocent ligands can play various roles, such as spectators, moderators, electron/H+/0/- suppliers/poolers, cooperators, or actors, in reactions. This review highlights stoichiometric or catalytic reactions driven by substituted ethylenes and dithiolenes, as well as six-membered ligands like catecholato, benezendithiolato, aminophenolato, and o-phenelyenediamine derivatives. The chemically, electrochemically, and photochemically induced lability of these ligands is expected to provide a rich platform for useful bond-activation and bond-formation processes.

Biological activity of non-radical vs. stable radical of a pyridazine-sulfonamide aminophenol-type compound

Himadri Sekhar Chatterjee et al.

Summary: In this study, a molecule, 4-(3,5-Di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenylamino)-N-(6-methoxypyridazin-3-yl)benzenesulfonamide (LSOAPH2), with a 2-aminophenol group was synthesized and characterized. The o-iminosemiquinonate monoanion (LSOISQ) was obtained through an electrochemical oxidation reaction and its properties were confirmed by spectroscopy. LSOAPH2 and LSOISQ exhibited anticancer activity in human cancer cell lines, with LSOISQ showing superior efficacy compared to LSOAPH2.

Ni(II) complexes of a new tetradentate NN′NO picolinoyl-1,2-phenylenediamide-phenolate redox-active ligand at different redox levels

Narottam Mukhopadhyay et al.

Summary: Three square planar nickel (II) complexes of a new asymmetric tetradentate redox-active ligand H3L2 in its deprotonated form have been synthesized, and their electronic states and properties have been characterized. The experimental results are rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The UV-VIS-NIR spectra and magnetic measurements provide insights into the electronic transitions and magnetic behaviors of the complexes.

Activation of ammonia and hydrazine by electron rich Fe(ii) complexes supported by a dianionic pentadentate ligand platform through a common terminal Fe(iii) amido intermediate

Lucie Nurdin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the coordination and activation of ammonia and hydrazine by electron rich iron complexes supported by a dianionic diborate pentadentate ligand system. Experimental and computational evidence suggests the formation of well characterized products through proposed reaction mechanisms. These transformations have implications for the ammonia oxidation reaction, a crucial process for the use of nitrogen-based fuels with first row transition metals.
