Mineral-Enhanced Manganese Ferrite with Multiple Enzyme-Mimicking Activities for Visual Detection of Disease Markers

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The geometric configuration of metal cations in inorganic enzyme mimics determines their catalytic behaviors, and optimizing their configuration is a challenge. In this study, we found that kaolinite, a layered clay mineral, can optimize the cationic configuration in manganese ferrite. The exfoliated kaolinite induces the formation of defective manganese ferrite and significantly enhances its enzyme-mimicking activities.

Emerging Phosphate-Functionalized Co3O4/Kaolinite Composites for Enhanced Activation of Peroxymonosulfate

Qihang Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, phosphate-functionalized Co3O4/kaolinite (P-Co3O4/Kaol) catalysts were prepared and used for the degradation of environmental pollutants using peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The presence of phosphate enhanced the adsorption of PMS and the electron transfer of Co2+/Co3+ cycles, resulting in superior catalytic performance and stability of P-Co3O4/Kaol. Additionally, the ·OH radical was identified as the dominant reactive species for the degradation of Orange II. This work provides a novel preparation strategy for functionalized nanoclay-based catalysts for effective pollutant degradation.

Nanoscale Interactions of Humic Acid and Minerals Reveal Mechanisms of Carbon Protection in Soil

Menghan Yu et al.

Summary: The concentrations of terrestrially sourced dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic ecosystems have increased in recent decades. The mechanisms of organic matter-mineral interactions, one major pathway for soil organic matter sequestration, are not well understood. This study investigated the effect of calcium phosphate mineralization on humic acid (HA) fixation in simulated soil solutions with or without clay mineral montmorillonite (Mt). It was found that Mt promoted nucleation and crystallization of calcium phosphate, contributing to the long-term persistence and accumulation of HA. The findings highlight the crucial role of Mt in DOM sequestration and suggest knowledge gaps that can improve soil C sequestration.

Legacy Effects of Sorption Determine the Formation Efficiency of Mineral-Associated Soil Organic Matter

Shuling Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that repeated sorption of identical DOM solutions led to a stabilization in MOM formation efficiency, while depletion of high-affinity compounds further decreased MOM formation efficiency. Although continued exchange between DOM and MOM molecules altered the composition of DOM, it did not impact MOM formation efficiencies. The interactions between the sorptivities of DOM components and mineral surface chemistry explain the legacy effects that regulate fluxes and distribution of organic matter in the soil.

Sarbasree Dutta et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the separation of hydrogen from H-2-He mixture gas using a graphene-coated halloysite nanoclay membrane. The presence of defects and different surface charges in the membrane enable an appreciable H-2/He separation factor. The permeate flux of H-2 and He through the membrane has also been studied.

Nanoclay Modulates Cation Occupancy in Manganese Ferrite for Catalytic Antibacterial Treatment

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: This study reports a new strategy based on the properties of nanoclay (montmorillonite K10) to modulate the cation occupancy of manganese ferrite. The strategy increases the proportion of Mn (II) in manganese ferrite and causes more manganese ions to migrate to the tetrahedral sites. The synthesized inorganic compound exhibits excellent enzyme-like catalytic activities and antibacterial functional properties.

The migration and microbiological degradation of dissolved organic matter in riparian soils

Weihua Li et al.

Summary: Riparian zones are important for water purification as they can decrease the concentration of organic matter in water through adsorption and microbial degradation. This study investigated the migration of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in riparian zones and found that wetland soils can absorb organic matter from forest soils and adjacent reservoirs, acting as a major sink for organic matter. Microorganisms in the wetland system were found to utilize certain compounds as electron acceptors, leading to enhanced removal of organic matter.
