Radiation-Induced Solid-State Transformations of Uranyl Peroxides

Melissa Fairley et al.

Summary: Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of untreated and gamma-irradiated Ca-2[UO2(O-2)(3)]·9H2O show atomic-level changes as the material transitions from crystalline to amorphous with increasing irradiation dose. Irradiation leads to conversion of peroxide groups to hydroxyl groups through interactions with neighboring lattice water molecules. Comparisons of irradiation products of two different uranyl triperoxide monomers provide insights into the influence of Li+ and Ca2+ countercations on the transformation process.

Ozone-Facilitated Formation of Uranyl Peroxide in Humid Conditions

Savannah E. Benjamin et al.

Summary: In this study, it was observed through experiments that Metaschoepite transformed into studtite, a rod-shaped mineral, in a high humidity environment. The addition of atmospheric ozone was found to significantly increase the rate and extent of this transformation. These findings suggest the need for a re-examination of storage systems where the impact of atmospheric ozone is not considered.

Radiation-induced amorphization and recrystallization of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles

Jianren Zhou et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that hydroxyapatite nanoparticles undergo amorphization under ion irradiation and recrystallization under electron irradiation, with a strong size effect observed. The smaller sized particles exhibit enhanced recrystallization under electron irradiation, attributed to the higher density of dangling bonds making the bonds easier to break and reform.

Meta-studtite stability in aqueous solutions. Impact of HCO3-, H2O2 and ionizing radiation on dissolution and speciation

Junyi Li et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the dissolution kinetics of meta-studtite in aqueous solutions containing HCO3-, as well as the influence of added H2O2 and gamma-irradiation on the dissolution kinetics. C-13 NMR experiments and speciation studies were used to evaluate the stability of meta-studtite, while experiments regarding the stability of H2O2 in solutions with UO22+ and HCO3- were also conducted due to its fast consumption in some dissolution experiments.
