Enhanced activation of persulfate improves the selective oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by earth-abundant metal oxides embedded on porous N-doped carbon derived from chitosan

Rafael. L. L. Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the preparation and characterization of porous N-doped carbon derived from chitosan, which serves as a solid support for earth-abundant transition metal oxides. Fe2O3, CoO, NiO, and CuO nanoparticles are loaded onto the support and used as catalysts for the oxidation of primary alcohols using peroxydisulfate or peroxymonosulfate. Quenching tests suggest the presence of a significant contribution from a non-radical oxidation process.

Interfacial Reaction-Directed Green Synthesis of CeO2-MnO2 Catalysts for Imine Production through Oxidative Coupling of Alcohols and Amines

Jingwen Li et al.

Summary: In this study, porous CeO2-MnO2 binary oxides were prepared through an interfacial reaction between Ce2(SO4)3 and KMnO4 without any additives. The as-prepared catalyst showed higher Ce3+, Mn3+, and Mn4+ content, larger surface area, and more oxygen vacancies. It exhibited superior catalytic activity (98% conversion and 97% selectivity) in the oxidative coupling reaction of alcohols with amines to form imines, and worked effectively under a wide range of temperatures and substrates. In-depth analyses demonstrated a strong interaction between CeO2 and MnO2 in the catalyst, leading to a positive synergistic effect in the direct coupling reaction.
