Vapor-triggered reversible crystal transformation of a nickel-based magnetic molecular switch

Shufang Xue et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the vapor-triggered crystal-to-crystal transformation between a discrete trinuclear complex and a two-dimensional coordination polymer. The transformation exhibits a coordination-induced spin state switch behavior attributed to the structural phase transition triggered by solvent signal, which can be detected reversibly through optical and magnetic responses.

Reversible coordination-induced spin state switching in a nickel(ii) complex via a crystal-to-crystal transformation

Yaqian Zhao et al.

Summary: The recent upsurge in coordination-induced spin state switching (CISSS) is being applied in the areas of switchable contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and molecular spintronics. In this study, a novel CISSS behavior driven by solvent desorption-triggered single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) deligation process is found in a dinuclear nickel(ii) complex. The thermal stability, crystal structures, thermochromism, and magnetic properties provide evidence for this behavior. Additionally, the reversible crystal transformation accompanied by optical and magnetic responses in cycles suggests a new strategy for developing external-stimuli CISSS materials.

Elastic Crystalline Fibers Composed of a Nickel(II) Complex

Sotaro Kusumoto et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the generation of elastic crystalline fibers from nonfibrous crystals of metal complexes by applying mechanical stimuli to platelike crystals of Ni-II(salophen). The high elasticity of the resulting crystal fibers is attributed to the presence of molecular strands composed of slip-stacked arrangement by nearly planar Ni(salophen) molecules. However, the flexibility of these fibers is lost upon the introduction of chloroform solvent molecules into the crystal lattice during recrystallization.

A Fluorescence-Detected Coordination-Induced Spin State Switch

Hannah Kurz et al.

Summary: The study presents a family of planar nickel(II) complexes with sensitive CISSS tracked by fluorescence detection. These complexes fluoresce in noncoordinating solvents but are fluorescence-silent in the presence of axial ligands. FD-CISSS shows higher sensitivity compared to absorption-based CISSS.

Vapochromism and Magnetochemical Switching of a Nickel(II) Paddlewheel Complex by Reversible NH3 Uptake and Release

Katharina M. Fuerpass et al.

Summary: The reaction of [NiCl2(PnH)(4)] with NiCl2 yields a binuclear paddlewheel complex capable of reversibly binding and releasing NH3, showing distinctive vapochromic properties and magnetochemical switching. Detailed SQUID measurements reveal that in the complex, only the Ni atom coordinated to the NH3 molecule is responsible for its paramagnetic behavior.

Vapochromic behaviour of a nickel(ii)-quinonoid complex with dimensional changes between 1D and higher

Ryota Yano et al.

Summary: The nickel(ii)-chloranilato complex displays reversible vapochromism even after the removal of coordinated vapour molecules, maintaining its spin state and six-coordinate geometry. The unique vapochromism, influenced by the weaker ligand field of the chloranilate ligand, is related to dimensional changes between 1D and higher dimensions.

Solvent Effect on the Spin State of an Iron(II)-Triazole Trimer

Irene Sanchez-Molina et al.

Summary: The study presents a triazole-based trinuclear iron(II) compound with solvatochromic spin crossover behavior, where magnetic properties depend on the crystallization solvent molecules. Immersion of crystals in different solvents can promote color change, providing insights into the solvent-induced switching process. This research contributes important details to understanding the solvatochromism in spin crossover materials, offering potential alternatives for controlling switching and their application as colorimetric sensors.
