Participation of fractional charge transfer on the efficiency of singlet oxygen production: Heteroleptic ruthenium (II) bipyridine derivatives

Karim El-Naggar et al.

Summary: The photophysical properties of synthesized heteroleptic polypyridyl ruthenium(II) complexes were investigated. The excited state lifetime and oxygen quenching rate constants were observed to be ligand dependent. Singlet oxygen quantum yield values were found to vary and the efficiency of producing excited singlet oxygen decreased with increasing partial charge transfer parameter.

Visible-Light Induced Fixation of SO2 into Organic Molecules with Polypyridine Chromium(III) Complexes

Steven Sittel et al.

Summary: In this study, a photocatalytic approach using sensitizers made from earth-abundant chromium(III) ions and visible light was employed to incorporate sulfur dioxide into organic compounds, leading to the formation of sulfones and sulfonamides. Three different chromium(III) sensitizers were used, and their reactivity and stability under the reaction conditions were investigated. Through various experiments, the key reaction steps and challenges in these transformations were identified, and the reactivity of the reduced chromium complex was found to be a crucial factor determining the reaction outcomes.

Quantum Yield of DNA Strand Breaks under Photoexcitation of a Molecular Ruby

Cui Wang et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment relies on the generation of highly reactive oxygen species by light-induced excitation of a photosensitizer in the presence of molecular oxygen, causing DNA damage. Recently, the potential of photoactive complexes of non-noble metals as photosensitizers has been discovered.

Osmium Complex-Chromophore Conjugates with Both Singlet-to-Triplet Absorption and Long Triplet Lifetime through Tuning of the Heavy-Atom Effect

Yoichi Sasaki et al.

Summary: The relationship between the spin-density contribution of heavy metals and the net triplet excited-state lifetimes for Os(II) and Ru(II) complexes modified with perylene units was investigated. It was found that the lifetimes of perylenyl group-localized excited states are shortened by the heavy-atom effect, which can be largely circumvented by introducing meta-phenylene bridges.

Emerging Strategies in Enhancing Singlet Oxygen Generation of Nano-Photosensitizers Toward Advanced Phototherapy

Mohammad Tavakkoli Yaraki et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the recent development of nano-photosensitizers and nanoplasmonic strategies in photodynamic therapy. Firstly, the limitations of classical photosensitizers in PDT are discussed, followed by an introduction to three types of new generation nano-photosensitizers and their synthesis methods. The strategies of using metal nanoparticles to enhance singlet oxygen generation efficiency of nano-photosensitizers are also discussed. Lastly, the future prospects of these nanoengineering strategies are highlighted.

Shedding Light on the Oxidizing Properties of Spin-Flip Excited States in a CrIII Polypyridine Complex and Their Use in Photoredox Catalysis

Tobias H. Burgin et al.

Summary: The photoredox activity of Cr(III) polypyridines, which have a spin-flip excited state, is similar to that of Ru(II) polypyridines with metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states. This insight allows us to use Cr(III) complexes for photocatalytic reactions not previously explored, contributing to the understanding of the fundamental photochemical properties of first-row transition-metal complexes compared to precious-metal-based photocatalysts.

Antibacterial effect of singlet oxygen depending on bacteria surface charge

Il Kwon Bae et al.

Summary: We investigated the bactericidal effects of two types of photoinduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) on bacteria with distinct surface charges. The results showed that one type of ROS was significantly dependent on the surface charge of the bacteria, which could be significant in enhancing treatment efficiency in the clinical field.

Bulky ligands protect molecular ruby from oxygen quenching

Laura Stein et al.

Summary: Chromium (III) complexes exhibit phosphorescence under anaerobic conditions but are quenched in the presence of oxygen. This study explores the use of sterically demanding ligands to shield the chromium (III) center from oxygen, enabling luminescence applications of these complexes under aerobic conditions. Optimal sterically shielded complexes showed high photoluminescence quantum yields and longer excited state lifetimes, demonstrating the potential of this ligand design approach.

Review of Chemical Reactivity of Singlet Oxygen with Organic Fuels and Contaminants

Jomana Al-Nu'airat et al.

Summary: Singlet oxygen, a form of reactive oxygen species produced by excitation of molecular triplet oxygen, has high energy compared to ground state O-2, initiating low-temperature oxidation. Its reactivity has inspired diverse applications in chemical, biochemical, and combustion phenomena. This review emphasizes its natural occurrences, production techniques, and reactivity with organic fuels and contaminants, as well as computational efforts in developing mechanistic insights into its reactions.

Singlet Oxygen in Electrochemical Cells: A Critical Review of Literature and Theory

Summary: Research suggests that the formation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) may be the root cause of poor cyclability and rapid degradation in metal/O-2 batteries. However, current experimental evidence is not yet conclusive regarding the existence of singlet oxygen, and side reactions may also play a significant role in verifying its presence.

Luminescent First-Row Transition Metal Complexes

Christina Wegeberg et al.

Summary: Recent developments in the field of inorganic photophysics and photochemistry indicate a shift towards cheaper and more abundant metals, away from traditional precious and rare elements. Conceptual breakthroughs have expanded the range of elements, particularly those in different oxidation states, that can be used for emissive complexes. New design strategies have led to the discovery of fundamentally new types of 3d-metal-based luminophores and photosensitizers operating in solution at room temperature.
