Online Inspection of Browning in Yali Pears Using Visible-Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Interpretable Spectrogram-Based CNN Modeling

Yong Hao et al.

Summary: This study conducted online discriminant analysis on healthy Yali pears and those with different degrees of browning using visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that the prediction accuracy of the original spectrum combined with a 1D-CNN deep learning model reached 100% for the test sets of browned pears and healthy pears. Features extracted by the 1D-CNN method were converted into images by Gramian angular field (GAF) for PCA visual analysis, showing that deep learning had good performance in extracting features. In conclusion, Vis-NIR spectroscopy combined with the 1D-CNN discriminant model can realize online detection of browning in Yali pears.

Handheld Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: State-of-the-Art Instrumentation and Applications in Material Identification, Food Authentication, and Environmental Investigations

Hui Yan et al.

Summary: This review article summarizes the rapid development of miniaturized handheld near-infrared spectrometers in the past decade, providing an overview of the current instrument developments and exemplary applications in material and food control, as well as environmental investigations. It addresses the issue of exaggerated claims by some direct-to-consumer companies, which has raised unrealistic expectations and harmed the valuable technology of NIR spectroscopy. The article also highlights potential applications that can enable non-scientifically trained individuals to solve quality control and authentication problems in everyday life using this technology.

Rapid and real-time detection of moisture in black tea during withering using micro-near-infrared spectroscopy

Shuai Shen et al.

Summary: This study developed a moisture prediction model based on Elman neural network (ENN) combined with principal component analysis (PCA) for rapid detection of moisture in withered leaves using miniaturized near-infrared spectroscopy (micro-NIRS) and a smartphone. Experimental results showed that the model has high prediction correlation coefficient and residual predictive deviation, providing a portable, accurate, fast, and non-destructive method for predicting the moisture content of withered leaves.

Theoretical Simulation of Near-Infrared Spectrum of Piperine: Insight into Band Origins and the Features of Regression Models

Justyna Grabska et al.

Summary: The study investigated the near-infrared spectrum of piperine using quantum mechanical calculations and compared the accuracy and computing time of two efficient approaches. The research assigned vibrations and revealed complexity in the piperine spectrum, with the most meaningful contribution from binary combination bands. The sensitivity of different spectrometers to specific piperine vibrations led to differences in predictive performance when analyzing piperine content, with a benchtop spectrometer showing higher selectivity.
