Universal versus system-specific features of punctuation usage patterns in major Western languages

Tomasz Stanisz et al.

Summary: This study examines the distribution of intervals between consecutive punctuation marks in literary texts from seven major Western languages. The results show that these intervals can be described by a two-parameter discrete Weibull distribution, with values specific to each language and even affected by translations. English and Spanish display the least constraints in placing consecutive punctuation marks, as indicated by the computed hazard functions.

Three-way multi-granularity learning towards open topic classification

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a unified framework of three-way multi-granularity learning for open topic classification. It uses multilevel granular structure of tasks, adaptive decision boundary, and three-way enhanced clustering to detect and explore unknown topics in open dynamic environments. The approach also incorporates knowledge accumulation and compares the performance with classic models through experiments.

Context reinforced neural topic modeling over short texts

Jiachun Feng et al.

Summary: This article introduces a Context Reinforced Neural Topic Model (CRNTM) to address the issue of feature sparsity in short texts. The proposed model infers topics for each word in a narrow range and utilizes pre-trained word embeddings for topic modeling. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of this model in topic discovery and text classification.

Building siamese attention-augmented recurrent convolutional neural networks for document similarity scoring

Sifei Han et al.

Summary: Automatically measuring document similarity is crucial in natural language processing. The article introduces a method called Siamese Attention-augmented Recurrent Convolutional Neural Network (S-ARCNN) that combines multiple neural network architectures. The evaluation using the Quora Question Pairs dataset demonstrates the potential advantage of S-ARCNN in processing longer documents.

On the integration of similarity measures with machine learning models to enhance text classification performance

Hassan I. Abdalla et al.

Summary: This study thoroughly investigates the impact of integrating similarity measures with machine learning models for text classification. The authors propose newly-integrated models, conduct benchmarking studies, and demonstrate the significant performance improvement of these integrated models over state-of-the-art methods.

HiDeF: identifying persistent structures in multiscale 'omics data

Fan Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method called HiDeF is introduced, which utilizes the concept of persistent homology from mathematical topology to identify robust structures in data at all scales simultaneously. The application of HiDeF to mouse single-cell transcriptomes significantly expands the catalog of identified cell types, and the analysis of SARS-COV-2 protein interactions suggests hijacking of the WNT pathway. The HiDeF method is available through Python and Cytoscape.
