Summary: We use new data from a survey of Spanish households to analyze the entry into entrepreneurship during the COVID-19 recession of 2020. We find that the decline in firm entry was concentrated among low- and medium-income households, while high-income households were relatively more successful in seizing new business opportunities during the pandemic. This difference in entrepreneurship is not explained by social distancing measures, but rather by factors such as wealth and access to external finance.

Summary: Promoting rural entrepreneurship is crucial for tackling depopulation and driving economic development. A study in this article investigates rural entrepreneurial activity in Spain, an area facing significant depopulation challenges. Through regional panel data covering 2007-2018, the research examines various factors including unemployment rate, GDP per capita, economic growth, bank credit, road infrastructure, R&D investment, and human capital level, to determine their impact on rural entrepreneurship. The findings suggest that rural entrepreneurship is driven by market opportunities rather than influenced by regional unemployment levels. Moreover, the availability of investment in R&D and credit positively affects rural entrepreneurship. However, professionals with higher education are less enticed by the rural environment for entrepreneurship compared to those with secondary education. This study enhances our understanding of factors that foster rural entrepreneurship in Spain and calls for government reflection on policies relating to employment, education, innovation, and rural revitalization.

Summary: This paper empirically studies the impact of digital inclusive finance on the urban-rural income gap in China. The results show that digital inclusive finance has a narrowing effect on the income gap, both in terms of primary distribution and redistribution. Specifically, narrowing the income gap in primary distribution has a mediating effect on the overall urban-rural income gap, while narrowing the income gap in redistribution does not. Countermeasures are proposed for digital inclusive finance based on these findings.

Summary: This paper argues that Chinese inequality is now plateauing and possibly declining, contradicting the previous trend of sharp increase. Drawing upon various data sources and perspectives, the paper analyzes the evolution of inequality and provides preliminary explanations for the observed trends. By relating the turnaround to classic phenomena in development economics literature, the paper suggests that the evolution of Chinese inequality may follow certain patterns.

Summary: The combination of digital technology and finance has introduced a new model for financial inclusion, impacting the imbalance in financial resource distribution and the urban-rural income gap in China. Digital inclusive finance plays a significant role in reducing the urban-rural income gap, with coverage breadth being a key factor. By promoting entrepreneurship among residents, digital inclusive finance can effectively bridge the urban-rural income gap, especially in regions with lower economic development and education levels.
