Conventional lignin functionalization for polyurethane applications and a future vision in the use of enzymes as an alternative method

Thayli Ramires Araujo et al.

Summary: The valorization of lignin in polyurethane products enables the utilization of this biomass, which is the second most abundant natural polymer in the world. However, the complex and cross-linked molecular structure of lignin limits its use, making it necessary to develop methods to make lignin more reactive. Chemical modification and fragmentation are among the methods that have been developed, but research on the production of lignopolyols derived from enzymatic catalysis applicable to polyurethanes is lacking.

New kinds of lignin/non-isocyanate polyurethane hybrid polymers: Facile synthesis, smart properties and adhesive applications

Tonghe Zhang et al.

Summary: The development of non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) has been driven by the increasing demand for less toxic and non-dangerous chemicals for material preparation. Lignin, a natural and sustainable polymer, has been used to replace petroleum-derived chemicals in the synthesis of NIPUs. This study successfully synthesized lignin/NIPU hybrid polymers (LNIPUs), which exhibited excellent mechanical and thermal performance, as well as smart properties such as shape memory, self-healing, and reprocessability. The LNIPUs also showed outstanding adhesive properties, with a maximum adhesive strength of 24.5 MPa when bonding aluminum plates.

Performance evaluations of flexible polyurethane foams manufactured with castor oil-based bio-polyol

Jungha Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, castor oil-based bio-polyol and two types of gelling catalysts were used to synthesize PU foams. The effects of bio-polyol content and catalyst type on sound absorption, compression strength, and VOCs emission were examined. The results showed that increasing bio-polyol content and using a tin catalyst resulted in smaller cavity and pore sizes, leading to higher sound absorption and compression strength. Moreover, the application of bio-polyol also reduced VOCs emissions from foam degradation. Therefore, using bio-derived polyol holds promise for reducing environmental issues in industrial applications.

Summary: In this study, the reaction kinetics of palm-based polyol ester production catalyzed by commercial lipase N435 were analyzed. The results showed that N435 has a higher affinity towards TMP compared to HO-PME, and TMP has a lower inhibitory function. The obtained kinetics agreed well with the model of enzymatic transesterification with TMP and HO-PME as competitive inhibitors.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of using decayed lignocellulosic biomass filler on the preparation and properties of polyurethane foam. The results showed that the addition of decayed lignocellulosic biomass improved the physical properties of the foam, including low density, low thermal conductivity, and high water absorption. These properties were found to be dependent on the amount of filler added.

Summary: The study indicates that KL and PKO can be used as additives to replace petroleum-based polyols in the production of VE-PU foams, significantly affecting the growth profile, foaming reactivity, and morphology of the foams. Furthermore, adjustments to the standard formulation can alter the mechanical properties of VE-PU foams. This alternative approach offers new possibilities for the application of VE-PU foams in packaging and mattress industries.

Daniela Bresolin et al.

Summary: In this study, biopolyols derived from castor oil and glycerol were synthesized using Novozym 435 and Eversa Transform 2.0 lipases. The biopolyols showed different characteristics when used for the synthesis of polyurethane foams, with N435-derived biopolyol providing better mechanical properties. However, the use of Eversa Transform 2.0 lipase suggests the potential for low-cost enzyme production of biopolyols and foams, possibly competing with chemical catalysts.
