Analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters as predictors of biomass accumulation and tolerance to heat and drought stress of wheat (Triticum aestivum) plants

Oksana Sherstneva et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in young wheat seedlings and found a correlation between effective quantum efficiency of photosystem II and biomass accumulation, as well as changes in photosynthetic activity under short-term heating and drought stress. Additionally, the study revealed a positive correlation between Phi(PSII) dark level in young seedlings and tolerance to short-term stress, and a negative relationship between tolerance and non-photochemical fluorescence quenching level under long-term stress conditions. Overall, the results suggest that chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in young seedlings have the potential to predict biomass accumulation and stress tolerance.

Glycinebetaine mitigates tomato chilling stress by maintaining high-cyclic electron flow rate of photosystem I and stability of photosystem II

Dandan Wei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that glycinebetaine (GB) can enhance chilling tolerance in tomato plants by protecting chloroplast ultrastructure, mitigating PSII photoinhibition, and maintaining PSII stability under chilling stress. GB also increased electron transfer rate and cyclic electron flow, reduced reactive oxygen species production, and alleviated PSI photodamage. Introduction of the GB biosynthetic pathway and exogenous GB application are effective strategies for improving chilling tolerance in tomato plants.

Biochemical Characterization, Antifungal Activity, and Relative Gene Expression of Two Mentha Essential Oils Controlling Fusarium oxysporum, the Causal Agent of Lycopersicon esculentum Root Rot

Seham A. Soliman et al.

Summary: Tomato is an important food in human diets, but root rot disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum leads to significant losses in quality and yield annually. Recent studies have suggested the use of medicinal plant essential oils (EOs) to control fungal diseases. In this research, Mentha spicata and Mentha longifolia EOs were used to control F. oxysporum, and their active compounds were found to possess antifungal effects through malformation and degradation of the fungal cell wall. Gene expression analysis showed upregulation of defense-related WRKY genes in response to abiotic stress, and the application of EOs also upregulated genes related to defense in roots under pathogen conditions.

Glycinebetaine mitigates drought stress-induced oxidative damage in pears

Tiequan Niu et al.

Summary: Glycinebetaine (GB) is an osmoprotectant found in plants that plays a role in response to environmental stresses such as drought. Exogenous GB has been shown to enhance drought tolerance in pear trees by reducing oxidative damage, increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, and reducing levels of oxidative substances and electrolyte leakage in leaves. This study suggests that GB-mediated drought resistance in pears may be attributed to its antioxidant activities and reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation.

The complexity of sound quantification of specialized metabolite biosynthesis: The stress related impact on the alkaloid content of Catharanthus roseus

Mahdi Yahyazadeh et al.

Summary: Medicinal plants grown under stress conditions exhibit higher concentrations of specialized metabolites, potentially due to enhanced biosynthesis, although stress also reduces biomass gain. Study on Catharanthus roseus plants showed that alkaloid concentrations were markedly higher under drought stress, but overall alkaloid content per plant increased only in the first two weeks. High salt concentrations did not affect alkaloid concentrations but significantly decreased total alkaloid content, suggesting that both increased biosynthesis and reduced biomass contribute to stress-related concentration increase.
